In retrospect, was the second round of Wu-Tang solos underrated?

Tical 2000 IS better overall than Tical, it just lacked the hit singles

Nobody mentioned The Pillage yet...which is dope and disappointing at the same time
Probably the best produced of all the 2nd wave next to Supreme Clientele. Had everything the others were missing... majority RZA, Truemaster & 4th Disciple production, Clan cameos, Blue Raspberry AND Tekitha, and kung fu skits. A perfect TD pass :ohlawd:
But Cappadonna was just so awful and sleepwalking through this joint that it was something that came and went. Talk about a blown opportunity, because Cappa was at the same starting line as DMX, Pun, Canibus, Nore and Cam'ron when it came to careers starting from hyped debut albums that year. But he ended up getting left in the dust by all of them except Canibus

There was one bad - U-god and one classic - Ghost..the rest fall somewhere in the middle

Dirty might have had the biggest single hit of these batch of solos or at least on the level of Cherchez La Ghost

Supreme Clientele:mj: & Bobby Digital In Stereo were instant PIFF:ooh:

...Tical 2000 was bloated, but I still went HAM to it:manny:

Immobilarity was such a departure from what I expected, but overtime I appreciate it:lupe:

Another aspect of the second round of albums that just wasn't as good was the art direction/artwork style, In Stereo and nikka Please aside.

You shouldn't judge a book by its cover but looking at the album covers you just knew they weren't going to live up to expectations. Supreme Clientele was a very pleasant surprise.

Everywhere...You never there.
Makes me appreciate Ghost that much more . Negro was like Bron carrying the squad to the chip game :wow:

But BTS is a personal fave and I appreciate US .

@Red often cover creativity (or lack thereof) let’s you know exactly what you’re getting into

The car was real. They just had bad photoshop effects for the name & title on top of it.

Part of the whole corny photoshoot where cops were going to bust him for selling Wu CDs to kids but he 'flipped the script' and arrested the cops.

Definitely underrated. They were getting more adventurous with the soundscapes and the lyrics were getting more intricate (and weirder thanks to the addition of Cappadonna) but those records are mostly great.

I think Tical 2000 is as good as Tical, the RZA debut is also classic. Obviously SC. The rest are good to great except Immobilarity which has some really terrible production choices

Imagine wanting this beat on your album:

nothing hurts me more than not getting that Deck album during that amazing first run of solos leading up to Wu-Tang Forever. I know they were supposedly lost in the flood but damn

i might be the only nikka in the world who thinks Tical 2000 > Tical. If you take out all the skits(theres 9 of them!), the intro and outro, and trim the fat(maybe like 3-4 songs) and you have a really good 14 track album that I think is honestly meth's best body of work

I loved that shyt as is. I’ve always like Tical but T2000 is my favorite of the two.

Rae floated on that beat though , give him props.

That fake swizz beat on that lp is trash though.

Yeah the rapping was good. Rae went for a bunch of budget Havoc type beats for the most part, it was easily the worst album sonically that the Wu had released at that point.

The biggest issue for me was they didn't use Rza for the full albums. Which is still to this day one of the dumbest decisions in rap history. You have one of the greatest producers in rap history, in his prime, coming off a historic run....and you don't use him. It's mind boggling.

Fred.

Facts. And like @BuddahMAC said they weren't even using 4th or True Master.

Not only that but they barely utilize 4th Disciple & True Master, so you have the Killarmy, Sunz, La, etc... albums with better production than what the core Wu releasing at the same time. Imagine the core 9 spitting over Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars beats...

I low-key liked some of the "side" projects more than the what the core was putting out.

The Pillage was dope. I didn't expect much and it ended up being one of the albums of that run that I play the most. Indeed for the overall cohesivness of the album and the certified Wu sounds. Cappa himself is forgettable but I didn't mind. Never knew he had that kind of hype (I'm not in the US).

I gotta say I wasn't disappointed by Rza albums at all, because already with Gravediggaz you knew he liked experiencing with different stuff. That being said, the fact that a whole lot of his beats were used on affiliates albums and compilations instead of by core members kind of pisses me off, but then again maybe those guys just didn't want to use these somewhat different Rza beats.
