In the 80's the other coasts had to use profanity as a gimmick to stand out from NYC dominance.

Yet West Coast allowed rappers to enjoy plat sales.
in 2019 an NY nikka would rather try to sound like a southern nikka than an NY nikka.
New Yorkers live in a bubble.

LOL......And nothing you said has anything to do with the overall topic. U just going left because the OP spoke truth and u had nothing to add. :ehh:

you talking about the 80s and im bringing back to reality :mjlol:

Maybe if u had something to add but u dont. The first platinum/multiplatinum rappers were from NYC not the westcoast so nothing u have said so far has any relevance to the topic.

:yeshrug:Call it what you want. Theatrics and shock value have always been used by musical artists to stand out from others.

Chuck Berry did the duck walk.
Hendrix lit his guitar on fire and used heavy distortion.
Screamin Jay Hawkins got out of a coffin with a bone in his nose.
Don't get me started on metal artists...

Edit: What separates a "gimmick" from legitimate artistry? There are folks who would call hip-hop itself a gimmick.

Good question...And that forces me to acknowledge a few things.

1) No one even acknowledges 2 Live Crew as the first pioneers of the south. They usually get overlooked. That in itself confirms that we as a collective didn't really take them serious enough artistically. Dre and Snoop plus that Damon Wayans stand up special confirmed what we were all thinking...that 2 Live Crew was lyrically below standard compared to the NYC standard. So the question arises.....Why is 2 Live Crew overlooked if we talking artform? Is it because we didnt take them serious as executioners of the artform?

2) Eazy E purposely wanted records with cursing. Dr Dre himself said he was trying to do records like Richard Pryor. The lipstick and eyeshadow thing didnt work artistically so now we gotta switch it up, change the image. If Eazy E and then later Suge were both calling out Dr Dre for being a studio gangster...that in itself exposes the act as a gimmick.

3) J Prince admitting he didnt allow rap music in his own home tells me he looked at it as a business more then an art for him to be that involved in it yet wont even allow it in his own home. Further confirmation was him pushing to have a picture of his artist who had just been shot in the face as a promo. Your artist almost dies but u looking at how to promote it to sell records. As if the image is more important then the moral stability of the situation.

People cussed when they talked/had conversations so it wasn't a gimmick. People started to communicate in their rhymes in a more regular way. That is why New York rappers started to curse as well. Can't have it both ways, if other regions used it as a gimmick than New Yorkers finally decided to copy everyone else because the rest of the country communicated more authentically.

You 'skeebee a doo wop a doobie doo, guess what america we love you' ass posters can keep your raps that are cleaner than a bar of soap. Kind of hard to not say 'fukk The Police' when they are beating the shyt out of you.

Too bad the content of the music destroys everything u are saying. Suzi never came into a court room with an uzi and got shot by police. That was a made up story. NWA did not kill a hooker by shooting her while in a trunk. And if Ren was in the backseat running a train on a 14 year old then he needs to be in prison with R Kelly. None of these acts mentioned are a "regular way" for most people. Since when does the 'rest of the country communicating more authentically' include talking about setting up police to get ambushed and killed or shooting at angry crowds and reporters from the roof of buildings?:rudy:

Thats not "regular" talk....thats gimmicky made up fairytails in the form of rap songs.

NWA was telling studio gangster rhymes.....the gimmick was more then the cursing. Cant throw NYC into that same mix because NYC was already telling made up stories in a fun form. Ladididadi was about a mom and daughter fighting over a guy. NWA took the story telling waaaaaaaaaaaaay further by adding wreckless street nikka elements into the mix. But likeI said..Eazy and Suge already exzposed Dre for being a studio gangster....So obviously he was a playing the gangster character as a gimmick.

Pulling out a gun to kill people over nothing is not "regular".....Its either a "gimmick" or its mental illness.

I got a shotgun, and here's the plot
Takin' nikkas out with a flurry of buck shots
Boom, boom, boom! Yeah, I was gunnin'
And then you look, all you see is nikkas runnin'
And fallin' and yellin' and pushin' and screamin'
And cussin', I stepped back and I kept bustin'
And then I realized it's time for me to go
So I stopped, jumped in the vehicle
It's like this, because of that who-ride
N.W.A is wanted for a homicide

Or you could just stay the fukk out of my conversations like I promised to do with you. Remember, I promised not to even comment on anything u have to say about hip hop or life in genera because your knowledge on most things is trash. I kept my promise. So why dont u do the same and stay the fukk outta my conversation.

Remember me and you are 2 different people who dont relate. At 21 you couldnt even help ya mom with her light bill....Me at 19 I went to the army and being in Basic Training I didnt need to spend money, I sent grandma $100 every 2 weeks. I came home, she had an envelope filled with every money order I sent because she didnt need my money. I declined and told her keep it because thats what a real man does, he holds down the people who held him down....A real man doesnt sit on his ass in mommys house at 21 and cant even help to have her lights turned on....Only a piece of shyt son would be so useless and worthless at 21. SMH.

Isn't this natural if it started from up there?

They better had been the first ones to go plat...

...btw, the only NYC rappers who were selling plat in the 80s were those managed by Rush.
Take Rush away, and all y'all had was folks like UTFO and Utramagnetic who was going Triple Copper - and that's with other regions buying the records also.
