well I've been to most Asian countries and have traveled with black people and we'd be walking in the streets of some of the most remote places and you'd have 12 years old kids literally running out their houses yelling MICHAEL JORDAN !!!!! when they saw the black dude

try again
:russ:

Yet you say I have stupid argumentative opinion.

nikka i ain't gonna poll the fukkin world for the coli FOH. The only facts is you going out and speaking to people WORLDWIDE. MJ selling more clothes does not prove his popularity over Tyson, and I explained exactly why. Yet you and ya boy keep talkin about no-one wants to argue ya points. Balfrog in Street Fighter makes Tyson more well known in Japan alone, argue that.

In China, schoolchildren ranked him with Zhou Enlai as the two greatest figures in twentieth-century history. The children knew Zhou because he helped create their Communist Revolution. They knew Jordan because he miraculously floated through the air as both an athlete and as a pitchman for American-produced advertisements for Nike shoes, which the children avidly followed on television.

argue that

bruh you ain't countered with nothing but stupid argumentative opinion. I asked you to prove you statement that Tyson was considerably more popular than Jordan using quantifiable facts yet I have been conveniently ignored.

But this post is undeniable proof to you huh?

The only way you can somehow measure one's popularity over another in the sports industry is through economic impact. Marketing, in most cases, drives someone's popularity through commercials and other marketing efforts. Kids who are wearing Jordan shirts in Africa are more likely to know who Jordan is even though they don't know the sport. The kind of reasoning why Tyson is more popular argued in this thread fall into "romanticising" the significance of being the heavyweight champion of the world. There's no way to quantify that other than "I remember how badass Tyson was when I was a kid" type of shyt.

There are tons of articles written about Jordan's economic impact globally. I want to read about Tyson's impact on a global scale to take this seriously.

nikkas who are starving wit no water back in the 80's, 90's had heard of Tyson, maybe MJ too, yet cause they ain't buy they clothing they don't factor into this now? you got nikkas buying multiple sets of Jordans every month, how does that equate to worldwide popularity?

argue that
Schoolchildren? Really? I'm not debating people know MJ but everyone of their parent knew MIke Tyson too. He won't be promoted as being a great figure for reasons I have already mentioned. Love how that quote makes it seem he's more known for the nike commercials too.

breh I ain't the one arguing about Jordan clothing or what not, bring that argument to someone else, that ain't my point.

globalization, the advent of new technologies and television in second/third world countries makes it a no brainer that Jordan in his prime was more popular than Mike Tyson on the simple fact his image was carried way further in places and households that Tyson in his prime could have never reached.
.

I have yet to get a logical argument countering these FACTS that a lot of yall are conveniently ignoring.

People don't watch NBA like that outside the US FACT.

Boxing especially back in 80's and 90's was more popular and none was more popular than Tyson. So how on earth are more people gonna be aware of Jordan than Tyson? Globally Tyson is Jay and Jordan is Rakim.

Dog...popularity of a retail brand and the person they're names after dont go hand in hand.

Been a minute since I took any sort of marketing class, but I forget the name
Of the method of retail transit is called. You can have someone buy a jump man shirt and not know who MJ is no different than rocking Tommy, Calvin or
whatever name brand it's named after.

I get the concept and if we're talking 2013 sure to a certain extent, Jordan is retired and is no longer in the public eye on a regular basis, but in the 90s Jordan dominated the media spectrum. You couldn't separate his brand from the person back then. You can't compare Jordan who was plastered all over tv,radio, print, movies etc in the 90s to Calvin Klein or Tommy Hillfigger. Most people have never seen those cats and they definitely don't know them outside of their clothing.

This is a tough one and Ima call it even...

I watched both these dudes entire careers and popularity wise they are truly inseparable...

Tyson was the most feared man on the planet in his prime and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world back when that still meant something...The Japs went absolutely wild for that dude when he went over to fight Douglas in Tokyo and the crowds in Europe post-prime when he did that tour before he fought Lennox were ridiculous...The man was simply HUGE popularity wise and anyone denying that wasn't around in the 80's/early 90's or their balls didn't drop yet...All of Mike's fights were must watch even though nikkas knew it was going to end in 3 rounds...

Jordan on the other hand has his brand and is by far the most popular basketball player of all time...Everyone and their mother knows the jumpman logo...
