More and more front offices are starting to utilize analytics.

LMA is regarded as one of the best midrange shooting bigs in the game. He shot 43% from midrange last season on nearly 900 attempts.

LMA shooting 43% from midrange is the equivalent to a guy shooting ~29% from three point range when it comes to points per attempt.

If you can get an open look from 3 it's undoubtedly a more valuable shot than a midrange jumper.

I don't know that there's a way to differentiate between LMA's contested and uncontested midrange shot attempts. But say that his midrange percentage jumps up to 50% when he's not being guarded. That's still only the equivalent to a below average three point shooter (33%) when talking points per attempt.

I'm not saying the midrange has no place in the game anymore. If the halfcourt D is suffocating you need a guy like a Kobe, Dirk, or LMA who can create a decent shot from midrange when nothing else is there.

But when a PG breaks down a defense with penetration and causes a defense to collapse... Or when the ball is being swung around at the top of the key and a defense is late on rotations. You want the guy from behind the three point line taking the open shot. Not the guy camped out at 18 feet.

The mid-range game is fine, it's just migrated to the PF spot.

Damn near every PF prospect now the first thing people wonder is "Can they develop a jumper?", most if not all the best PFs in the league can hit an 15-19 footer.

I think it's migrated to PF because they're tall enough to get off that shot. This isn't the 80s where unathletic dudes allowed players to have free reign to make those middies. You have longer athletes with the same available real estate of the court that hasn't changed if ever. You have to be somewhat taller to get
