Jay is a fakkit and has essentially ruined hiphop with his superficial bullshyt. Had Tupac been alive hiphop would be FAR more relevant than it is today.

I hope that nicca chokes on some Belvedere while riding in his Bentley.

Actually, a lot of them do make big power moves. They just don't get the type of media coverage Jay gets for it.

I'd really like to see what kinda big power moves for the average rapper you're talking about....besides maybe Pitbull

Without being disrespectful; he's alive > Biggie, Pac,

Stayed our of jail > Slick Rick

Actually came up in a better media era for Rap music > Rakim, KRS ONE, Big Daddy Kane

Put himself around great business minds & learned from their mistakes > Nas

Makes more mainstream music > Common

It's that simple, yet complex

Duke is definitely one of the GOAT busineessmen, but, his catalogue doesn't hold up, artistically.

Yeah...thats BULLshyt.

Fistful of jewels
This dude seems like he will never fall off. I mean when you compare him to the all time greats like Rakim, KRS ONE, Nas, Biggie, Pac, Big Daddy Kane, Common, Slick Rick and the rest of the greats, Jay Z seems to be able to stay in the media and be relevant for oh so long.

Can an argument be made that Jay is the greatest hip hop artist ever due to his outstanding success, fame and relevance?

Rakim pioneered lyricism and is considered the greatest by many hip hop purist.

KRS ONE also considered one of the best, added a lot of consciousness, reggae and battle rhymes.

Nas considered the apparent heir to Rakim is excellent at storytelling, great lyrics and continues to shine but not with all of Jay's success.

Biggie and Pac are dead. Jay learned that trying to be the hardest street rappa may not be the wisest decision. He learned from the mistakes of Biggie and Pac and chose another route.

Biggie Daddy Kane was a combination of the aboved mentioned artists and even he had to give it up to Jay. By the way he took Jay in and mentioned him for some time.

I could go down the list and by no means am I saying Jay is better than all these artists but atleast he is on their level and has to be mentioned. Jay seems to persist and outlast a lot of the greatest rappers.

But why is Jay so popular, successful and relevant. More so than the above mentioned rappers?

Without the success and relevance, would Jay still be considered one of the best?

What is his secret?

SERIOUS DISCUSSION --- LET'S GO!!!!

Not at all. He came along at the perfect time. Most of the greatest MCs were nearing the end of their primes, two of the biggest stars were gunned off the map forever, and Hiphop as a whole, just got bigger and more mainstream.

Jay-Z didn't market himself into shyt. Dame and later Steve Stoute, made Jay-Z. And before you say why don't they make another Jay-Z, why didn't Gloria Carter make another one?

Jay is very skillful but his biggest keys to success has always been:

- business mind / business backing: when you are the OWNER or PRESIDENT or HNIC of the label you are signed to you have an UNLIMITED album and marketing budget and never get your music pushed back, gave Jay an advantage over almost every other rapper in history

- follow trends and/or do gimmicks do help him sell albums: from faking retirements to marrying B to the recent Samsung deal Jay has almost always had a fake gimmick to help him sell records

- being a very selfish and narcissistic person prepared to do anything to get himself ahead: from shyting on the dude that bought you into the game to turning group albums into solo albums to having solo singles on your artists albums to screwing over Dame Dash, Jay will do almost anything to better himself. Didn't he even shoot his own brother at one point?

Those three things combined with some serious insecurities, serious skill and a good work ethic is why Jay Z is where he is where he is today.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
"Jigga held you down 6 summers"

This is before the Internet blew up. Before an artist dropped 100 mix tapes

When biggie was dropping his second album, 4 years later. Wu tang dropped their second, 4 years later. PAC dropped every 2. And so on.......

Jay was dropping an album every year. He wouldn't go away. He beat his name into your head. Actually was gonna name his second album "heir to the throne" while telling you why he was the best and also king of ny the whole time

Still it wasn't until Annie and hard knock life that he crossed over. Sold 5 million when nobody clearly took the crown yet, went on the first national tour that was hardcore hip hop since biggie died, and still dropped every year after till the black album

You never got a break from him. And it's not like he sucks or something. He was consistent where new rappers might never drop 3 albums. Let alone 6 straight in 6 years
