I don't see what she said wrong.

However, I do wonder why there isn't an equivalent of an Olivia Rodrigo or Billie Eilish for Black girls. I don't think we should be asking grown women like Megan and Janelle to make content suitable for kids but it's like nobody is. Wheres this generations bow wow or mindless behavior, omg girlz etc,
There is. its just not main stream. Or we dont make it mainstream. Fact is the mainstream does not accept that type of music from a black woman.

Janelle was not getting any play when she wasnt sexualized :heh:

Megan is a whole different story. All she has going for her is the ratchetness since she got a phat ass :yeshrug:

She has a very specific lane so none of this will hurt her career. But it wasn't wise for her to air this out on social media coz they gonna make her life hell for a few days

If India can survive the Joe Rogan controversy, she can survive this..

India. Arie didnt have to be explicit to get popular.

Bruh, I've been to several Essence Festivals dating back to the early 2000s. It has always been a mix of age-appropriate/family oriented acts with sexually explicit artists. I remember one where R. Kelly literally brought out a damn bed on stage and started simulating sex while singing. 30 minutes later Frankie Beverly was on talking about some "joy and pain" :beli:. All this pearl clutching is revisionist nonsense. People know what they're getting when they go.

You dont see the clear difference do you? R kelly simulating sex in a bed is like nudity in a Michaelangelo painting. Does the art and talent overshadow the sexuality here? Hell nah, this aint shyt but a amateur night at the Pink Slip strip club:scust:

It's seems no will claim to appreciate the sex sells mentality, but it does. Meg, Saweetie, Latto, and Janelles recent popularity are proof.

If everyone had India Arie's concern this wouldn't be a concern. People can't complain and also be tuning in.

Saweetie’s last album flopped. Latto’s last album didn’t chart within the top ten. Janelle Monae’s recent album tied her worst ever chart debut outside the top 15.

Getting butt ass naked doesn’t guarantee prominence, success, or even popularity. Its a gamble just like any other gimmick. It worked for Megan but Megan never cracked 100K in sales until AFTER the whole Tory Lanez debacle that she was successfully able to parlay into a feminist marketing angle.

Pink Pantheress might be the closest thing to what you’re describing but yeah I agree….the music from the bow wow/lil Romeo era might’ve been somewhat corny but they weren’t crazy explicit like this current generation.
She's dope, her mixtape was pretty good.

The point was mainstream, there's no labels giving a Black teenager the Olivia/Billie package.

The black women that tend to consume music the most don't want that. Tinashe just dropped a fire project a couple of years ago but if I tried to boost that it'd fall on deaf ears.

Plus, it's more about that "image" than the actual music itself.

FWIW, Essence Fest was always a more conservative/grown-up music festival...especially in contrast to things like Summer Jam. but you'd have to be crazy to think that all your aunties who been going now seeing Meg and Janelle out here wasn't gonna say something.

Tom Joyner wouldn't let no shyt like that fly on his cruises
He'd probably have his face in them cheeks
