Was just about to post this.

20 dead but no shots were fired...?

Hand to hand fight to the death. Word to Mortal Kombat :mjlol:

Imagine sending troops to enemy soil, but not arm them with guns?

Genuine and dumb question - how does this affect you and I?
India and China are both nuclear powers and even in peacetime both have a large impact on the US economy.

@Rhakim these militant Indians want to fight everyone

Extreme nationalism encourages conflict as the response to difficulty. The government is getting severely criticized for its response to the pandemic (on top of the numerous anti-minority conflicts of the previous year), so trying to galvanize its troops against a foreign enemy is the automatic go-to move to distract the population.

The government doesn't want a real war though, they only want the posing. Unlike their most insane supporters, they full well know that China would stomp them in an all-out war.

It's impossible to know because information release of such events is dominated by propaganda. India and China are both famous for distorting military events to portray themselves as better than they should, but it's not like we don't do the same thing. Remember that missile attack from Iran where we claimed none of our soldiers were hurt, and then there were a few with minor injuries, and they eventually admitted there were over 100 with traumatic brain injury from the blast?

It is interesting because both armies are relatively untested with this generation of soldiers. Both have increasingly good, modern equipment that is domestically made but neither has many veterans since they both last had a major war in the late 1970s early 1980s. China vs. Vietnam that China basically lost and India invading East Pakistan to help found Bangladesh. Nukes have kept the region relatively peaceful.

The Strategic Postures of China and India: A Visual Guide

According to this March 2020 study published by Harvard University's Belfer Centre, India has an overwhelming advantage in the region in aircraft and air force capabilities as well as in conventional forces.

However, the problem is that Pakistan and China are unconditionally allied, and in the event of a Sino-Indian war the Pakistanis are certain to get involved. The study has overlooked this point, that war means India must fight on two fronts, which I think is quite important as it would throw all their maths off.

After reading these latest accounts I get a clearer picture of the events

Sources said that things went south when the Indian team proceeded to the contentious Patrol Point 14 to verify that the Chinese troops had retreated from there as well as per the understanding during the military-level talks. It was at PP 14 that the main skirmish took place. The Indian side noticed an observation post, which would have given the Chinese a clear view of the entire Galwan Valley and the Shyok confluence and the strategic Daulat Beg Oldie road.

As talks were being held to pull down this structure, the Indian patrol party was attacked by a large Chinese force that had surreptitiously gathered in the dark of the night and had occupied some heights as well. “Col Babu got hit in the head but it is not clear if he was specifically targeted.

  • Both Chinese and Indian accounts agree that Indian commanding officer took his men across LAC to check whether China has evacuated a strategic position
  • Both Indian and Chinese commanding officers met to negotiate. This is where the accounts begin to differ.
  • Indian account claims Chinese soldiers planned an ambush and attacked them in the middle of negotiation while Chinese account claim Indian soldier attack their commanding officer which trigger the Chinese soldiers to attack.
  • Both Chinese and Indian commanding officers were killed in the clash and several Chinese and Indian soldiers got wounded and fell into river.
  • Indian soldiers called for reinforcement and the clash continued for hours.
  • Indian soldiers claimed they returned 16 dead Chinese soldiers to Chinese side, they might be the Chinese soldiers that fell into river earlier and got swept to Indian side and later died from wound and exposure like the 17 Indian soldiers.
  • Indian side claimed they spotted at least 40 stretchers at Chinese side although they didn't know whether they're dead or wounded. This might be where the earlier "43 Chinese casualties" claim came from.
Personally I'm sceptical about Indian claim that China prepared an ambush to attack them and their earlier claim that they're outnumbered 5 to 1. If China intended to attack them from the beginning why did their commanding officer expose himself to danger by meeting the Indian soldiers and why the battle sound evenly matched if Chinese side had prepared a meticulous ambush. More likely explanation is the negotiation broke down and an unplanned fight happened and Indian side embellish their story to make their side sounds more heroic.
