3 years ago I was in Varanasi, a holy Hindu area, and was on a boat in the Ganges River... so many cremations done in the early morning right on shore.

I've never been to the Ganga. It's supposed to be sacred, but if people really believed that then why would you pollute it. Besides I'm irreligious as fukk.
I don't get why they have cremations on the river. My dad is super religious and he used an electric crematorium for his parents, then the ashes were scattered in a nearby river. Much more hygienic. If that's good enough for somebody like him, why isn't it good enough for those who send their dead down the Ganga?
