  • RapAgainstRape, a three-minute video that’s fast gaining fans online, Uppekha Jain and Pankhuri Awasthi put the spotlight on issues from female feticide to politicians blaming miniskirts for violence against women and the recent ban on a documentary about a 2012 gang rape and murder.

“Are you beginning to see the hypocrisy in what we proudly call the world’s largest democracy?” Ms. Jain asks in the rap. She says politicians should focus on more important things than banning consumption of beef or displays of skimpy underwear. “It’s time we refurbish our mental vicinity and find new definitions for honor, dignity, respect and masculinity,” the rap continues.

RapAgainstRape has been viewed nearly 125,000 times in the two days it’s been on YouTube and is drawing support at home and abroad.

“Girls, one word – BRILLIANT!” one user posted below the video. “GREAT JOB LADIES,” another user chimed in.

There were some negative comments as well, prompting one person to post: “Some of the comments on this video are disgusting.” The person added; “It shocks me that even on a video condemning the rape culture certain individuals think it’s funny or appropriate to downplay the issue and point fingers at the girls.”
