Ok, but my family specifically told my brothers and I that they moved up north so that they could send their children to better schools and not see them endure what black people were subject to in the South. Both of our parents are from the deep South, and they both feel our upbringing would have been far worse had they not moved up to settle in the Northeast. My dad was attending MIT and my mom Harvard when they met, which meant they had already established some kind of base here before we were born. That's not to say the North is exponentially superior, but the opportunities are much greater and the political climate is such that legislation like this would never pass.

Not compartmentalizing or minimizing this legislation and its impact on the black people who're victims of hate crimes while living in Indiana, nor am I suggesting that racism isn't wielded against us in supposedly "blue" states. I am saying that this particular kind of legislation would never fly in New York or Massachusetts or California. Legislation that is specifically tailored to dilute the penalties for hate crimes against black people is only found in states like Indiana, where the white supremacy is flagrant and in your face. Some black people prefer that kind of racism to the more covert, subtle machinations exercised by the good liberal whites. They're both insidious and harmful to our community, but I'll take my chances in the "blue" states of the Northeast.
