It encourages more people to do it and sends the wrong message at the end of the day. Then again, we do live in an "do anything for money" society, I guess.
It depends on what message you think is being received and by whom. If you think brown skinned women are receiving a message that their skin tone is inferior, I can understand your concern. However, I’m pretty certain that brown skinned women already know and understand that they won’t be as well received with their true skin tone on these type of platforms; so they may make less money and are less likely to appear on people’s algorithms.
So I guess the question is whether the dishonesty is worse than the colorism. I say if colorism didn’t exist this wouldn’t even be a conversation and she would present herself as she truly is instead of a 19 year old light skinned baddie.
And there’s a lot of worse ways to make money than pretending to be light skinned online. People pretend to be a whole lotta things for money and sometimes for no reason at all. Again, this wouldn’t be an issue if colorism didn’t exist.
