vimpat. they wanted to put me on keppra at first but my doctor changed his mind and thankfully the vimpat has worked wonderfully.
That's good! I've only ever taken Keppra and thankfully it has worked for me. The beginning was rough, but it's been just over 3 years now and I'm pretty used to it.

I have a lot of survivor friends on different AEDs as well as one friend who takes Keppra for Migraines... Anti-epileptic drugs are powerful and have more uses than just seizure prevention. I'm really glad that "kepprage" stage was only for a few weeks for me, I really thought I might snap on someone in the beginning! It also made me feel drunk and tired as my body adjusted. No breakthrough seizures at all, no dosage increase, and no seizure auras but I do have to watch my stress levels and sleep, because we aren't quite sure what triggered my last seizure! It's frustrating!

Have you had any issues with Vimpat? If you don't mind answering, (you can PM me if you'd like) are your seizures under control?

i dont mind sharing, hopefully it helps those out there! in the beginning i had some issues with it, but nothing crazy, the usual symptoms when trying a new medication. like you, i also have to watch my sleep (hence why im in this thread, terrible habits for years) lack of it is my biggest trigger for a seizure. alcohol as well, i still drink but i just dont get as crazy as i used to, and thankfully since ive started taking it in march 2015 i have been seizure free!

i was scared to take the medicine at first because when taking any brain medication it can change how you are as a person, but when i had my last seizure, it was so severe that it gave me suicidal thoughts for 3 days. i have had heart surgery, fractured my skull in multiple places, along with a plethora of physical issues and none of those compare to those 3 days trapped in my mind. honestly, the scariest 3 days of my life. i never felt that way before and NEVER want to again, thats what got me to take the medication. i couldnt be happier. i feel like me again.

Wow! That's a lot... I can identify with the seizure and being scared. Mine started in my temporal lobe then went generalized which is why I passed out. I'll never forget the buzzing aura, sudden nausea and watching my mouth move to call for help, but no sound was coming out.

Postictal state is a bytch, to be honest and I've never been as angry as I was in those first few weeks after the seizure. It came out of nowhere and set me back big time on the progress I made 14 months into my recovery from brain surgery. I was so, so, so pissed. At everyone, even my doctors who have been great.

Seizures hurt and they're expensive!! Glad you are well controlled! I take this magnesium citrate powder that I mix into water, and it's really helped me with calming down. Usually before bed, after my shower, I'll drink this and it helps. It's expensive, but it's less than all the medications I take just to keep my brain calm, so I don't complain. You can buy it at health food stores or order it online! Only thing is that too high of a dosage can loosen the bowels a lot, so you would have to watch out for that. It has helped me sleep, and stay asleep which is why I haven't taken my sleep medication in a long time. With a consistent routine, I'll be okay.

It comes in different flavors, but I like the cherry the best. Tastes kinda sour though, but it's not terrible.

I'm glad you feel like yourself again, and I hope you stay seizure free!!

Thank you! You're welcome, I don't mind sharing about my experiences, especially if someone else can benefit.

After brain surgery, I lost 34 pounds, 25 of that in 12 days. I had to learn how to swallow again because I would choke a lot and all of my liquids had to be thickened with this powder called thick it. I realized after coming home that my appetite had changed drastically, I even joked with my neurosurgeon that he "put something back together the wrong way!" Haha! It's true, I hardly ever eat anything fried anymore, my stomach turns at the thought of greasy foods unless I have a very specific craving, and I legitimately crave vegetables and fruits.

Exercising helps keep me relaxed and I need that in my life! I was only 24 when I had my stroke and my blood pressure is normal now, but we know it consistently ran high pre-stroke. There's also some familial history of brain aneurysms through my mother's side, I just happened to have one and it ruptured. I'm alive, but not without struggles!! My point is, exercise helps me feel more in control, it keeps my mind feeling clear which definitely helps me during "bad brain days." The mind-body connection is more real and important than its given credit for.

Haven't yet gotten back into lifting heavy, but I will once I have my diet back to something consistent. It's just volatile because of the parts of my brain that were most affected! I do work with a dietitian and nutritionist, and having that guidance kept me off of another medicine I would've had to take to stimulate my appetite. I can't explain it, but if I didn't make myself eat on a schedule, I wouldn't eat at all. I rarely ever actually feel hungry anymore and this is tied to my brain and anti epileptic medication I have to take.

I'm always walking a fine line, trying to balance! One day at a time and if I keep my mind right, there's nothing (except what is medically harmful) I can't do. I've come very far in the almost 4 1/2 years (next month is the halfway mark) since I've experienced a stroke, emergency brain surgery, acquired a brain injury and became a survivor. There are good days and bad days, and my neuro team and I have learned a lot from and about each other from my case, because I'm definitely not textbook.

I just kinda roll with the punches and take steps back for perspective when I become frustrated with my brain not cooperating with my body. Mindset is everything!
