Nah, its more than being a part of something.

It is mostly wanting to try the newest tech as soon as it hits.
Its not new exciting tech though. Its very slightly better than the last one, always.

This isnt some new shyt that has to be had.

Its strictly status symbol so people can say i have the newest iphone.

In regards to the iPhone crowd? Yeah there is a bit of that, but that is to be expected in a company that has such a strong emphasis on design.

Every other iPhone has a pretty significant change that is worthy of the update "the S cycle"

iPhone 4S - Siri
iPhone 5S - An actual usable fingerprint sensor on a phone
iPhone 6S - 3D Touch

Some of you guys really need to understand that product cycles in technology move quicker in technology than it used to in the past. I can't even imagine holding on to a phone more than 3 years these days, even though we are reaching a point of diminishing returns as these things continue to evolve.

Y'all should know that these sales are not primarily to the customer but to the carrier. Apple has carriers buy the phones outright and then they have to resell them. Other manufacturers have to sell their handsets on consignment.

With the subsidies being removed from handsets sold by carriers I wonder how much longer Apple can maintain this distribution model?

That's even more commendable, especially considering that some carriers were sold out too. It takes real clout to pass on all the risk to the carriers with them getting nothing (no preinstalled apps, etc.) in return. As long as they keep selling, I don't see this distribution model failing.

Apple wants the distribution model to change. They want all that money coming in directly instead of through the big 4 so they can get their cut.

My comment was directed toward it failing rather than it changing. My point was that Apple makes the rules and if you want to play with them you have to get in line.

I think they're about to do some real damage (in a good way) by the time the 7/7s come along. Now that the carriers are getting away from subsidizing phones, there's really no reason to go through the carriers for an iPhone. For customers, if the price is the same as the carriers and you can get on the Apple Upgrade plan (for those that don't want to pay upfront), it's a win all around.

What? Why would Apple want the model to change? They get to sell phones regardless of whether or not a customer actually gets them in their hands.

Nah, you need to understand something when it comes to distribution. Apple is in front of so much competition the current way and also have to give Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T a cut for selling the phones in their stores.

Apple generally sells things themselves and with partnerships like best buy for Macs, iPads, and iPhones. They also sell these things through Wal-Mart and select retailers, but Apple NEVER wanted carriers to control any aspect of their phones when jobs was around because it generally limited themselves because of the 2 year upgrade cycle. These phone companies are losing more and more leverage as time goes on, Apple basically forced them into an interest free leasing or buy option because they entered the game themselves. Why did Apple wait so long? They have so much money in the bank that they can risk selling them on payment plans with no interest charged because theoretically they just put everyone on a yearly upgrade cycle which they have wanted since the first iPhone was ever released. They have put themselves in a position in where they are guaranteeing themselves $325 per year from MILLIONS of people, instead of having people run on a 2 year cycle and possibly switch to Android because of fatigue. T-Mobile was the first to break contracts because it was becoming clear as to what Apple was doing. Apple basically took their "phone protection" program money away from them as well with BETTER and FASTER Applecare service at any Apple store in the country.

It was just a necessary evil because Apple was just getting into the game when they first started. Their retail business has exploded in the past 10 years and with all the money in the bank this was a backhand to let these providers know who is really the boss and who should control the upgrade cycle. It should be the manufacturer, not the cell service providers.
