About to make history again :salute:

Former Warner Music Group honcho Lyor Cohen has found his first partner in a yet-to-be- announced talent management firm — and sources say he’s brought aboard Irv Gotti, the former head of record label The Inc. who discovered acts including Ja Rule and Ashanti.

We further hear that Gotti is aiming to advise rapper Drake while Cohen, as Page Six previously reported, has been giving career advice to Kanye West.

“If Lyor and Irv do work together, it’s possible they’ll have two of the biggest hip-hop stars under their management,” said a music insider after a photo showing Drake and Gotti meeting together appeared online.

The deal between Cohen and Gotti was struck this week, sources say. Cohen, who exited Warner in September, has been quietly setting up his new company amid speculation over which of his old colleagues at Warner, or his previous label, Island Def Jam, he would bring onboard.

A former Def Jam A&R exec who borrowed his industry moniker from Mafia don John, Gotti founded Murder Inc. records in 1997. He produced Jay-Z’s first hit “Can I Get a . . . ” as well as an album for “A Thousand Miles” singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton.

The label was partially owned by Def Jam, and the violent-sounding Murder Inc. name was later changed to The Inc.

But in 2005, Gotti was indicted for money laundering as part of a high-end drug ring along with his brother Chris Gotti. Both were later acquitted. Since then, Gotti tried to mount a comeback, launching a campaign last year to become president of Def Jam.

However Gotti lost out on he job to Joie Manda, and sources told us Gotti’s past probably hurt his chances. “If you don’t want to hire me — the best man for the job, the man who will die for it — cool, I understand. You think . . . the feds may come in here again if you hire me, cool,” he told MTV News.

One of the most underrated behind-the-scenes dudes of the 90's. As an A&R, signed DMX to Def Jam. Helped broker the deal to bring over Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella. Signed Ja Rule.

Where would that label have been without those three artists?

Think back to Def Jam circa 1996/97 and how bummy and flabby it was. They hadn't had a new star in years, and were riding artists like Method Man, Redman, Warren G, EPMD, etc to gold plaques, barely keeping the lights on.

And Lyor, love him or hate him, has a track record that cannot be denied. Let's not forget he ran Rush Management for Russell when it was the biggest management firm in rap, before the Violators and Goliaths and all of that.

Irv's been lurking back in the industry this year. Seen him hanging out with Nas and Jay at NBA2k launches and Summerjam and record release parties...

Lyor, Gotti and Drake could make some noise with that Warner deal.

For some weird reason, I was reading Billboard magazine last night, and I learned three interesting facts about today's music business.

The famous David Geffen said, he'd kill himself if he was trying to get into the music business today.

There's a galvanized push to make EDM and IDM the number one saling music genre in 2013.

And, many execs were thrilled with Lyor firing.

What does Drake have to gain from fukkin with Irv? He already the biggest star in the game and always makes smart moves so looks like he has a good team behind him already.

Irv did break some stars a decade a go. A decade. Where are they all now?

All 3 of those arent surprising.
The game is different now compared to back then. You got fukking execs offing themselves (Chris Lighty and Shakir Stewart) possibly because of the pressures

They really are trying to push dance music almost to the point of detremint and I dont think its a good look (and Im in eurocrakka land and am used to it)

Lyor was driven as fukk but with that comes the attitude of an a$$hole who is aggressive.

I'm a sound engineer. Used to post on SOHH when I was down with one of the crew/labels about 5 years back. I mainly work in the "EDM" scene now, hip hop my love but the money in EDM at the mo is :leon:

Peeps like Bassnectar turnin over $150,000 a show, 3 shows a week.

I'm not into the EDM scene now.

I prefer the early 00s stuff like BT, Avalanches, Perfume Tree, VNV Nation, and the 90s stuff: Propellerheads, Crystal Method, Prodigy, and Air.
