most of these dudes arent supertalented song writers in the first place, so while theyre "hot" theyre doing exactly what they should be doing, milking the cow and getting all the features they can so they can tour, get album budgets and get as much money out of the game as they can. this especially applies to chainz. he got the rare second chance in hiphop. he aint rebrand and work the south for 3-4 years to take a break when he got hot. he just bet on the wrong lead single, but he still eating better than he ever has. he just need a single

BUT the one thing you cant say at this point is he just needs a new single... his second album has come and went already, at this point he wont get another single until he somehow builds up a brand new buzz again... there are times you can slip and rebound quickly and times when a slip is going to cause big problems...

an older rapper trying to solidify himself as not being a one album wonder coming off a popular album that was widely regarded as low quality cant really afford to slip up picking the single for his second album

when I say he need a single, im talking about next time around. this lap is over. that album is cooked. he'd be wasting his money. that tru religion mixtape had two great singles. he need to drop another mixtape and ride a single into an album. dunno why he deviated from that gameplan in the first place it worked once.

Mixtapes are promotional tools now though to get your buzz up. No point putting your wackest shyt on there cause if the tape doesn't catch on it was pointless releasing the tape cause no one ain't checking for the album. But if you're gonna give the good shyt away for free you better hope you've got some more fire on deck.

I think Wayne in his prime did it right though, just murdering other people's shyt and if you want the original shyt, you gotta buy the album. But if you're gonna do that, you need to be SPITTING on the tape....

As far as Chainz, he only released his first album last year and had a shyt load of features in between so it was like the shyt all was part if the same cycle. If he took another year between albums and went away from the features like drake did, people would've been anticipating it more. yeah thats true. but im not even talking about guys with no talent. they can put out all the mixtapes they and want it won't matter.

take someone like j cole. those truly yours mixtapes being so good was a terrible move. if he woulda even taken 2 or 3 of the best songs off those and put them on the album his album would have been exponentially better. the "buzz" he gained from those mixtapes is no where near the impact of having a better album. half the people who bought the album prolly didnt even hear truly yours 1 or 2. and this dude has a college degree, as he loves to mention

see thats the problem. artists and labels are too worried about first week sales. illmatic didnt sell fast at first but good music always lasts. if you put our a good album people will find it, it will sell and you'll have a lasting fanbase. longevity>>>>a cheap gold album
