Jay z & Kanye have huge fanbases that they have garnered over their illustrious careers.

Besides the fact that it wasn't too long ago since I was in college, that my brother is just in the middle of that age group, and that I go to concerts regularly you should just go to kids forums like KTT or Reddit and check the threads. I think people think that young people are all brain dead idiots who don't understand good music. And Kanye goes far beyond music, dude has a forum filled with 16-24 year olds that bigger than the coli, his twitter was like the Bible to kids and his fashion shyt was to young (and old) Hypebeasts.

During college my whole circle became Miles Davis, Mingus, Coltrane, Monk etc fans. Yet on the coli they tend to think that if you are young, you only like Young Thug and Lil Pump. Which is why they sell so many copies ha. Obviously dumb 13 year olds and IG thots that spam the internet daily can't listen to Jay-z cause they can't understand him, but people in their late teens, early 20s and smart (or wannabe smart) kids definitely.

It was less common early on because the genre was young ,now that its been around if the people that grew up on you still care there is no reason to stop making music. Plus now there is a lane for everyone since people are still listening at that age then there will be those who are there peers that cater to them.

jay z is a rap legend tryin to make it to a billi, married to beyonce. kanye a culture icon with reach broader than rap so i think they are probably special exceptions.

shouldnt forget jay z, kanye got young fans that grew up listening to them, and carried on listening to them as they put out successful album after successful album. alot of the artists that never made it to relevancy in their 40s just didnt have the discographies to keep up.

also i think rap is so widely consumed now that theres a big enough market for more than just the cool new rappers, its become less about what the labels are putting on the top shelves and on the radio, alot of different niches you can sell records in.

Only reason the 'old' rappers in the 90s fell back is because the quality of music from the young nikkas surpassed what they were doing.
