Make the decision about what you want to do with your life first. If it requires a college degree, then do that shyt. Do everything you can to reduce the cost (get first two years in at community college if you need to, apply for financial aid, finesse the cheapest room/food/books situations you can, find out how to finesse your loans after the fact, etc.). Do NOT go to a for-profit school under any circumstances. Don't go to a private school at all unless they willing to cover damn near everything for you. Don't take out more loans than you need.

But if it sets you on the path to the career that defines your life? You'll always think it was worth it.

Now outside of the career question, do you need to go to college to learn shyt? That's really an individual question. Some folks do a fantastic job of educating themselves, or enter an atmosphere outside of college where they can get educated. Other people need the structure, or the leads to spur thought, or the opportunity to encounter different opinions, or the give-and-take with professors and students that college provides. You know yourself. But if you don't feel like you will really get educated on the world without going to college, if you see yourself as someone who's not a self-starter like that, then I would do it even if it isn't essential for your degree. You'll be glad you did.

For me personally, college completely changed my life, in several ways, in a good way. But the right person can get by fine without it.

Go to school. Just pick something you enjoy and see how you can make a career out of it. Don't be one of the many brehs who thinks they can outsmart the system and fail miserably.

Being black and wanting to make it without an education is just not smart IMO.

Yes. I think a college degree or any type of formal education is "worth it". There is enough information to research the field and the potential opportunities and the sense of accomplishment is a great feeling.

I'm a web developer with...10+ years experience and I have an associates degree.

I want to go back to school to get my BA but it would just be to learn more, not necessarily advance my career.

To add, I have a friend who works for Microsoft, never set foot in a college and is doing very well for himself.

Honestly, it just all depends on what you want to do and where you are in your life.

Graduate school is far more important if you want to have a great career and to get to a graduate school you need to have a high gpa in college, so only go to college if you gonna stay focused for next 4 years. And borrow as little as you can, and don't take summer off.

Best way to do is to get some credits through community college first. To save time and money.

Never ever borrow extra for room and boards either. That's how you get buried in student loan debt. And only pursue career with a good market and good pay.

Ehhh, it depends.

Engineering and IT(computer science, software, eng disciplines, etc) grads don’t need grad school. They can make bank without them. Outside those, grad school does make a big difference.

If you’re going to grad school right after undergrad, then yes, GPA is important. If you’re going after some work experience, it’s different. I’m in a top 30 business school now and I graduated with a 2.8GPA. :pachaha:
