The big fukk up Glenn made was hiring a first time OC. I like Tanner Engstrand, he did a good job for my squad as passing game coordinator...but it seemed clear he wasn't ready to be the OC when Dan Campbell passed on him so quickly. I'm kind of shocked Glenn decided to put his rep on the line with a guy who has never done it before. But let's not forget, the media and talking heads were praising the hire because they cream over young (white) boy genius offensive minds. Turns out the guy isn't ready and now everything is in flux.

Defensive coaches can't afford to fukk up when picking their OC. You're seeing DeMeco go through this right now, and last year. Now after the season when it's time to talk about drafting a QB there will be questions about play calling, who to hire, etc. I'm an AG supporter as a Lions fan, I'm just saying if people want to criticize him for anything it's this.

Again I've said it over and over I really don't like defensive head coaches. Some of them can do a good job but man most of them are not very good with QBs

How did the Jets think giving Justin Fields $30 million guaranteed was a good move? Mac Jones signed with the Niners for 2 years/ $7 million. Mac Jones is better than Fields :mindblown:

Is Mac Jones better than any mid to bottom tier QB or is he simply in a good system with an elite coach calling plays? I think it's the latter, and if you put Mac Jones on the Jets or any team besides the Niners (and Vikings) he'd struggle like he always struggled before 2025.

and this is why the league is moving towards most HCs being offensive coordinators or offensive minds at least

if you're a defensive coach:

if your oc sucks you will need to change him and then theres no continuity, which usually hurts qbs especially young ones
if your oc is great they will get poached for HC job and theres no continuity, which usually hurts qbs especially young ones

the only team that could afford constant oc changes recently are the eagles, and they have crazy talent AND they have an unstoppable built-in short yardage play any OC can use when they get there.

on the other hand, if your HC is an OC, your defensive coordinator gets poached => continuity isnt affected as much, its not a complete playbook change

as result of all this and a feedback loop, DCs are less considered for HC jobs, so its easier to find a good DC than a good OC who can stay at coordinator. standout OCs are poached immediately. there are some exceptions like mike mcdonald but nonetheless.

problem is most of these "genius" young OCs are TRASH when becoming Head Coaches. For every big eared goof and McVay, there's a bodycount larger than Prime Pornstars who are garbage.

yeah...the search for a genius OC who can be a HC is similar to a QB search. a lot of times they will fail and you try to get a new one.

the thing is when you get one you know you got one and he aint leaving, and youre set for the next several years at least

problem is way more hit than miss.

people clowned Man Campbell and now look. Even with both coordinators gone, they still look solid. And we both know he wasn't some genius OC when he got the job.

I'd argue the Bucs are a better example than the Eagles. They've switched out three times in the last few years (Canales to Cohen to Grizzard) without missing a beat. With two of those guys becoming head coaches. Flip side the Eagles have clearly missed on two OCs in the last 4 years (this year and 2023).

campbell is one of few exceptions, but he also

1) got a really talented roster
2) not a defensive coach, and while not some great OC he was always a TE/TEs coach so he knows offense
3) had coaching blunders that directly affected his team not going into sb (niners game)
4) has a brand people can buy into on offense at being ultra aggressive

hes more of a "rah rah" peoples coach than a defensive coach and also is involved in offense

pure defensive coaches like Saleh, Glenn, Demeco can't do that.
