Is America too divided to be considered a country?

If you gave most Americans the options of: civil war, balkanization or "working this thing out"

they'd easily choose that last one.

Unlike the Civil War, even at the regional level, there are differences between people. A state like Texas is red, but all of it's cities are blue. Now if all red states, were just red and all blue states blue, I could see our differences leading to a civil war.

The way our population is distributed, makes it a lot messier.

Plus Americans are relatively rich compared to the rest of the world. We have big screen T.Vs, smart phones, entertainment options galore and relative comfort. I don't see enough Americans throwing away that comfort for political disagreements especially when your basic rights are not being violated.

Yes. Nothing binds us anymore. Not religion ( or belief in God generally), not race, not belief in the scope of government, not culture, not language...not even the belief that the "country" we occupy should succeed.

We're just a bunch of people who happen to occupy the same plot of land.
