Probably the closest thing to Wakanda that I ever been too. I seen so much black excellence from tourists to workers, it was something out of an Outkast song:wow:

You mean DC or Maryland?

“I would never call Atlanta Wakanda,"said Dr. Maurice Hobson, a history professor at Georgia State University for African-American studies.

IS ATLANTA REALLY WAKANDA?
Studies show it's ranked No.1 for income inequality, even though it’s considered the ‘Black Mecca.’

ATLANTA — It’s a comparison we’ve all heard by now: Atlanta and Wakanda, the fictional country featured in the movie Black Panther. It’s a location that thrives with resources, technology and diversity.

While the census shows that Black people are the majority of the population in Atlanta, the wealth gap between Black Atlantans and White Atlantans is wide.

The median household income for a White family is $83,722 compared to $28,105 for a Black family, according to the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative.

Latresa McLawhorn Ryan is the executive director of the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative. She said the data is startling.

“If a person is born into poverty in Atlanta, there’s a four percent chance of escaping poverty in their lifetime,” she said.

To compare the economic racial divide, just 2% of White households in Atlanta live below the poverty line, according to the American Community Survey.

The average Black-owned business is valued at $58,085 while the average value of a White-business is $658,264, according to the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative.

But the imbalance doesn’t stop there.

Atlanta's top 5% of households are bringing home around $306,000 a year, while the bottom 20% all live below the poverty line, making less than $17,000 a year.

So, who’s in that bottom 20%?

You’ll find most of them in the heart of Atlanta’s south side and west side, where historic Black communities are trying to hold on to their neighborhoods, as property value goes up and gentrification begins to cause a demographic shift.

That’s the story of Black people in every major city.

At the bottom, economically, yet still somehow manage to seem to be ballin’ out and livin’ it up.

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.
I remember when i lived there, i was amazed by the number of rich black people i saw. like if an expensive car pulled up next to me at the light there was usually a black person sitting in the drivers seat. or if i go through an expensive suburb i'd see black families living there going about their lives. It was a very inspiring scene in my childhood. Plus the added allure of the city looking very modern, glossy and new, compared to ohio where i lived before and live now, cincinati and youngstown the cities are made of brick and look old and run down.

when I read this post I was curious to know where you are from to be so amazed at seeing a successful black person driving a nice car.

One thing shocked me about ATL was that they didn’t have a suburb that cracked the most wealthiest black suburb list. I was confident Maryland and Georgia would own the list but it was actually Maryland and Los Angeles with 1 or 2 New York burbs.

Damn, ya'll really setting the standards high. I'm just thinking culturally how it compares to the rest of the world.

White people live there :camby:

aint no vibranuim in bankhead:camby:

:dead:

Obviously its nowhere near to close to actual Wakanda. Relatively speaking though i feel like it represents black prosperity better than alot of places is all i mean.
Not trying to say it's perfect, but if someone were to post a graph/study of highest income black neighborhoods, i bet some Atlanta area places would be on the list.

You sound shocked but it should make sense considering Atlanta is home the countries highest number of black millionaires.
I don't see bently's or lambo's driving around in ohio. and when i do, usually its a white person driving.
Atl also home to most black owned businesses. so you see youself represented more in that way too.
It's not some big reach.
