you should want to live your life in a principled, honorable fashion.

Easy to live like an animal.

Why not challenge oneself
Your principles and honor have nothing to do with other people though. They may simply benefit from it. Being “good” isn’t a principle or honorable anyway.

If you honestly listen to shytty people who keep saying this as well, note that many times it's them trying to convince you to drop to their level.

This is a reasonable take, backed by science:

Again, the key is to good person and not be a pushover.
Lead with being a good person, then respond with the same energy they're giving.

Then if they're bringing you down, stop interaction, ditch them and go back to being a good person and find a win-win interaction.

Key thing a U.S spy brought up: America despite what people may believe always seeks a win-win solution when it comes to warfare. If that option hits their desk, that's the option they'll go with. That's America, the top dog when it comes to war. They actually follow the Prisoner's Dilemma pattern to a T. Spies are trained themselves to always go for the win-win and play positive-sum games.

"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey The Habit #4 is literally "Think Win-Win".

Good point brought up - even in relationships: If a woman is attracted more the jerk than the nice guy, then I think the nice guy is finishing first by avoiding that dysfunctional relationship altogether.

The a$$hole may get an 8 right now, but in a few years she'll be a 4 and have all their money :heh:

Additionally, in computer science there's what's known as greedy algorithms - at every decision the algorithm picks the direction with the highest/most selfish value.

As you can see here, starting at the top and picking the highest value all the time may actually lead to a lower overall number, which is probably most often the case than not to be honest:

Unless you have insane foresight, you're probably picking that wrong which 99% of the people probably will.

If life is hard now, try being a shytty person and see how much more it can drop.

In contrast, genuinely try to lead with being nice and see what happens.

Some people have to be good because they provide little to no utility to society at large, and their social milieu imparticular. One can justify a bad disposition if they produce something of real value--the abusive drill sergeant, or the awnry construction foreman. It's not a good thing to be good if that's your best or only method of being socially viable.

I wouldn't say that being a good person is overrated. It's just that only a few people will appreciate what you do for them and too many people will try to take advantage of you for being good.
This is the main reason I feel being "good" can be a dilemma. We live in a world where taking advantage of people is a normal way of surviving. The scammer is praised over the scammed as long as they're wearing a suit.
