Depends what kind of person you are

If you a "how high" jumping ass overachiever then the 9-5 corporate life is gonna be hard on you as your manager works you hard as possible and you never use your PTO. Better to overachieve for yourself than your boss taking credit.for your work.

On the other hand if you blow loud all day and only work when you have to (aka if you a real one :myman::troll:) then the security and structure might be beneficial. You just gotta show up on time and not kill your boss and you will be making rent and the weekend is yours.

But tbh you could make the opposite argument in each of these cases :ehh:

The point is to work your ass off and sacrifice years of your life with your own business or hustle or whatever to eventually scale it to a point where you have financial freedom and can do whatever the hell you want later in life. You’ll (likely) never do that with a regular nine to five. You also are likelier to end up completely broke going the entrepreneur route opposed to the employee route. It’s just a risk reward thing and depends on where your values are and how much you’re willing to put into it.

Had my own business at one point.
Had to shut it down.
There's ZERO downtime.
You're working damn near 24-7....
If it ain't being on a site...it's fielding phonecalls all time of night/day.
Literally was burned out after 6 months and went back to merc work.
Easy compared to running your own business...

What type of business was you running?

Depends on the industry, your field within that industry, your expertise, your work-style, and how you like to allocate hours.

As an attorney, I would much rather be a part of a firm, partnership, or in-house than a solo practitioner - in part. because the collaborative style and efforts make me a much more effective attorney than not.

A lot of guys thrive on being solo practitioners, but a lot of them are doing incredibly shoddy work - and end up losing a lot of time that could be saved as a part of a group.

Ideally, you would do both.

Having that consistent check, health insurance, 401k matching and being able to show employment history for when you need a loan or another job, makes it worth it.

On the other hand, they can fire you at any time, without warning, so it’s always good to have a skill or a side hustle, where you can make money when you need it. And that side hustle just might work out to where you can do it full time. You have to be self motivated though.

Still learning myself but currently in the both phase and it gets tricky. I’ve always hustled in some form. I’ve been full employee and I’ve been full hustle mode in life. Most recently during the pandemic I approached a side hustle of mine more as a business for the first time and saw tremendous growth. Then the problem grew of how do I now continue to grow it while also living off it. So I got the bright idea to get a job. Was lucky to get a remote gig so I’m kinda running both simultaneously during the day. On that same note, for like the first four months I pretty much tanked my business. All the processes and rhythm I had got thrown off cause now I have to give the job 8-9 hours of my day. What it has eventually taught me is that I probably wasn’t being as efficient as I could be cause what I’m now getting done in 4-5 hours in a day I was spreading out over the course of a full day. Long answer I know, but I think finding that balance is best especially early on in the growth stages. At the end of the year I’ll probably drop down to 4 days a week (32 hours) , if my next phase goes accordingly.

I remember those days, bsing most of the day and still paying rent and living good. Now I wish I used that time to really grow the business while my obligations were minimal.
