The Talented Tenth Theory was originally an idea of a white man- Henry Morehouse, back by white Northern philanthropists. Henry "Skip" Gates wrote an article about it on his roots website. The idea was implemented in the Harlem Renaissance, but didn't work out. The very brightest in our community thought quality literature would win us civil rights- W.E.B Du Bois, Alaine Locke, Jessie Fauset, etc- but they were very wrong. I don't think a theory base on 10% leading our population from its oppressive state is plausible. The masses should be included. Look at Kwane Nkrumah and how he led Ghana to independence basically using Garvey's model of mass organization.

Look at Jordan and Oprah if they wanted they could go half on creating a nationwide business specifically for creating jobs for black or fk create schools for our kids that actually teach black history. He didn't mean in terms of wealth. He meant the most developed of the races in terms of education, people like him. The "brightest" of the race would lead us out of our condition.
The problem with the people you named is that their wealth was given to them by whites. We need people who have wealth with no thanks to white people. Like black Wall Street

I'm not sure he meant what you stated because his actions did not show it. I'm spent a little time studying Du Bois and people you would call the "talented tenth" of the Harlem Renaissance and they did not seem to have as much interaction with the masses as they should. Unlike Marcus Garvey. They seem to spend much of their time trying to elevate the status of black folks by trying to appeal to White folks through literature. To basically show white folks they are "assimiliable". That they hold the same values as white folks, just as intelligent as white folks, that they can contribute to civilization etc, etc. If only they would have spent that much time investing in educating the masses, and realizing the importance of black economics
