I like Diplo and his catalog is pretty crazy but the premise of this thread is very true.

He jumps from one thing to the next thing and its clear what he's doing. He gets the cred, and then everyone forgets about it and moves on

I mean yeah, he's been running Mad Decent with Paul Devro & DJA since 2005. I got to applaud the dude for managing to juggle running a label, djing with Major Lazer, Jack U, and still doing solo sets, touring around the world, cranking out original material while doing remixes and production work for other artists. And promoting other artists whether small or big time.

But to the the really invested fan, or former, like myself....this shyt is painfully obvious that he vultured himself to get to that spot. I'm not the only one that it kind of rubs the wrong way. How is it that somehow this guy who's managed to create this new style of mixing and acceptance of different musical styles is now one of the only to profit from it while the creators and prominent artists of those styles can't even share a tiny fraction of the same success?

People don't even want to address it which is why these criticisms end up like this. Even Diplo knows it and said in interviews that he don't like when people use the race card in regards to his music cause that goes against what he does as an artists and a musician and a producer and a DJ.
How do you know the others aren't getting anything?

I've been to a few of his shows, and he seems to promote a lot of unknown, or upcoming dudes.

i cant call it yall
I forgot about this...
Diplowatch 2011 #4: Diplo Cannot Keep You Out of the Poorhouse

His artist at the time Maluca had an album on Mad Decent, was playing live, yet still on welfare...

yea same here. on one hand dude gave a lot of people exposure that they would other wise have and of course he's gonna profit off of it but ...
He did give alot of people exposure...I so can't negate that. He provided many fun times and is killer live (saw him twice actually...great DJ).

DJ Sega
Brick Bandits (DJ Tameil, DJ Tim Dolla, Nadus, etc)
DJ Diamond Kuts
Crookers
THe Proxy

I'm so torn on this...I discovered so much music from the guy...but

He's signed so many artists to Mad Decent and alot of them didn't even see a release.

Blaqstarr and Rye Rye were scooped up by NEET (MIA's label) after not doing shyt on Mad Decent.

HE's always been the star and the face of Mad Decent though so there's no real issue...but it does make you wonder.

BTW, my Philly heads know the dude held it down every summer with the block party from 08-now...and the shyt was free.

In all honesty, there could be worse people in his spot... :yeshrug:

This is just the reality of how Diplo became DIPLO. Which is why you really can't get too pissed off about it. He did open up the game for more artists in niche genres to prosper and provided a window of opportunity. Ofcourse as the leader of the pack he'll shine the brightest.

It's not really getting worked up over really. Really. His new music unfortunately is lacking...:yeshrug:

I would agree - for a dude that has made a living off bringing underground sounds worldwide to the mainstream (or close) he's never really put anyone on.
To be honest it's pretty much him and Dillon Francis who are eating from the Mad Decent vehicle the most. The kids love when they play those little EDM festivals.

Alot of the other Mad Decent artists never really seemed to reach a comparable level of fame and/or success.

I've seen him twice.

It's just... like @Tetris v2.0 said...his own artists seem to have a short shelf life same with the people he cosigns and he's quick to move from one thing to the next.

I still wonder why Switch left Major Lazer though at times...

History of white people in business. At least he was making good music. Too bad he had to be white.

But I knew about all these types of music before him so :yeshrug:

It's funny though cause I always thought Mia was the culture vulture cause she was copying balie funk and dancehall but didn't her and diplo were dating back then:ehh:

Diplo produced all of her Piracy Funds Terrorism mixtape.

She still has a fanbase but after that NYT article in 2010 it seems like she sort of alienated many people with her politics...being Sri Lankan and all that.

I tried to be fair in making this thread. This question and this topic is kind of a sensitive one...but Diplo has probably done more to his credit that outshines whatever criticisms positive or negatives may arise.

HE really put himself on through the internet and internet culture like Soulja Boy...really hard in the mid to late 00s. It's like you didn't know about Diplo from TV or the radio...it was from the internet and with the spread of mp3 music sharing culture he capitalized off of that. Dude put in mad work. He used to be the a&r, sending e-mails, designing the website, it's obvious dude got a passion for the culture. And really if you think about it with this whole EDM craze it was probably him, Justice, and Daft Punk that set it off around 2007. Alot of things were just bubbling at the time, I remember it. It almost reminded me of when Limp Bizkit first came out and metalheads were cosigning them as well as heads that were into hip-hop and grunge and shyt. He had that authenticity..to be able to tread the line between mainstream and underground.

Okay, this is just an example of this dude's style in less than 9 minutes...

edit:L gotdamn @ 2:56! :whew: :banderas:
This is cultural appropriation done very damn well...so well you can't help but fukking get into it...cause the shyt do sound good.

'but when you think about it afterwards... :patrice:
