I'm not sure there has been a bigger artist than Drake in the history of rap. Tupac and Pac don't count and it's because in addition to their talent, a lot of their popularity is attributed to them dying and the surrounding controversy.

I wouldn’t qualify Drake as a gangster rapper but he is the most successful “urban” musician in a while. Can’t really call him hip hop/rap tho because of the ghostwriting thing and the fact that his pop, R&B and dancehall songs are his biggest hits. I like some of his stuff though.

Is he bigger than Pac, Big, etc? Yes, definitely. But is he the biggest hip hop artist? That’s debatable because he isn’t solely hip hop. But biggest “urban contemporary” musician? Yes, again definitely

Drake doesn't fit the stereotypical mold of a gangsta rapper, I get it. I used to struggle with the idea of him being a gangsta rapper and when I asked myself who would qualify as such, I noticed a troubling picture, my idea of a gangsta rapper was problematic.

Drake is a contemporary gangsta rapper.
