I would argue the Dilla movement was more influential to hip hop. Changed soul sampling to how it is today (still relevant Madlib's classic work with Gibbs). Influenced millions of producers including Kanye, one of the best of our time as far as produjcers go.

J dilla's earlier beat were the tribe call quest influenced. He opened the doors for that whole chopping sample or whatever u want to call it sound for guys like Black Milk and Apollo brown
