Is going from Hip-hop to EDM a sell out move?

Depends. Some musicians stick to one genre while others expand. And the ones who expand, tend to do so for different reasons. And yeah, some will switch to something that is (or was) popping in an attempt to capitalize and make money. Usually by then it's too late 
but that's just how the cookie crumbles.
Thing about music and people that make it is that there's always someone looking to push past boundaries and plateaus in order to create something new. And eventually, that new thing starts to pop off. Usually a hybrid of something classic mixed with something new. It's something I've been trying to reconcile myself recently. I think those are the ones who we should look to. The others, who shift onto something that's popping already? Maybe they are selling out, but we can't know for sure IMO. I don't think people should box themselves into doing only one thing, but at the same time, better not to jump on a horse that's already dying and about to be beaten beyond death.

Music has no bounds. Rhythm is rhythm. Thats why a homeless kid on the street banging a steel pot and two buckets can sound great and be as amazing as someone as questlove or travis barker.
America and Westernized culture puts music into bounds, which is why its either really cool when artists of different genres collab or really terrible. Whereas for instance hispanic and south american music, one artist can sing, rap (its not technically rap like our hip hop but they speak rhythmically with the beat), ballads, slow jams, r and b, country etc.
In America its like groundbreaking if Nelly is on a track with a country dude, or Beyonce raps, or Kanye sings rather than raps...when B.O.B was getting pushed heavy he was touted as a rapper who can play guitar...Stevie Wonder can play like 12+ instruments well, but he has his style of music..he could easily do jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk, country, rap, rock, pop, probably rap too
but in America we put our artists in a box to fit one style...R & B is kind of fizzing out thats why a bunch of these women swooners are also 'rapping' now...i dont know.

man, i've been trying to do some edm shyt here and there but it's way harder than i thought. i mean, i'm not and never have been a big listener of that genre (as broad as it is) so maybe that is part of my struggle but yo, i'll tell you what...it sounds simple as shyt when you're listening to it but when you're trying to make it, it's a whole 'nother story. i think i've gotta straight up start copying shyt, particularly structures and arrangements just so i can feel right. cuz everything i've done so far sounds like a shytty imitation.
disagree, sounds hard as fukk to me. never tried mind you, but when i listen to EDM I'm like "that mixing tho!"
