Is having a degree better than not having one?

I'll say this much I think having a degree is a toss up because it's as if you don't major into right program it could be a waste of time and money.

Just about any career path requires certain traits that are needed to make it. I'm sure I'll get negged for saying this but most people who get a degree but never end up finding a job in that field never put enough effort into it :yeshrug:

  • How many jobs a week are they applying to? Just because a listing states a requirement does not mean they won't hire a candidate without it.
  • Are they willing to work for cheap/no money to gain experience?
  • Are they willing to relocate?
  • Do they study during nights/weekends/work breaks to keep their skills sharp and expand their knowledge?
Often times the answer to these questions are no. They only have themselves to blame.

Unless you majoring in engineering, who's making over 80k or over without more schooling? Even with computers, you still gotta pay for certs(or get your employer to pay for it)
$80K is no money man.
You can make that relatively easy w/o any education.

I tend to forget that most people dont think that way...so im not trying to come off ass a a$$hole.
But the ways to make money out there are endless.

I made $70K one year flipping used mens clothing.
My girl is a wedding photographer...no college...she'll probably make about $140K this year...she's probably stoned at home watching Wendy Williams while she edits photos and answers emails :skip:

the one thing people need to understand is that you can major in anything and go to med school. U just need to take the pre requisites. My opinion is to major in Nursing. that way u can still go to med school but if you dont get it. U have a guaranteed job and they will pay for your masters.

I have an MBA in healthcare management. I can not sit here and say that I needed what I learned in pursuit of that degree to work in the healthcare field. It's a checkmark on the resume and as a black man, I felt I needed it to 'be prepared for the bullshyt'
I am an adjunct instructor for a university as well and that degree was needed, masters or higher but knowledge is obviously necessary for that.
I would ultimately say that it is for the intangibles concerning the job, having a degree. You will be perceived differently by most and it gets even better with the higher degrees. All in all, I think that college could legitimately be looked at as a hustle in most cases but it's still the best thing smoking. I have a phone interview tomorrow with one of the largest medical supplies manufacturers in the world. How'd I get through the door for the opportunity? My MBA is why. School helps, but not as much as we are lead to believe. Best thing is to teach yourself some shyt that you can add to the bargaining table in regards to your skills.

While I have worked in IT, my IT degree has not helped one bit in getting a job even though a lot say they require it. Would be debt free if I had not gone to college as well. Bad investment on my part.
Might have to take this back :lolbron: At least in the company I'm currently at, I have a higher salary and a better outlook for future promotions than my coworker who is cert only and more experience.

My degree haven't helped me out that much either. To be honest, it helps white people a lot, but black folks it seems in IT they don't care about degrees, you have experience and references you would b better off than a degree IMHO.

Really depends on where you live, how savvy you are and how well you can code switch. I'm a college dropout who's lied about finishing college. I make about 60k now, but I have always been a really studious person and an autodidact.

So when I hit rock bottom after dropping out, I put my internet skills to use and learned how to use Microsoft SQL. I got a job as a data analyst in healthcare and haven't looked back. Been in many different fields, (non profit, charter schools, healthcare) and managed to finesse my way to a bag by playing the game the right way.

I will say, that sometimes I get nervous for my future, say between 45-55 because since I don't have a B.A. to start with I won't really qualify for those easy money 80k jobs managing departments like I know I'm capable of. Any upper management job that pays very well you're going to need a Masters and/or a lot of certifications. School is expensive though, and if I had to do it all over again I would have gone to a CC and started working non-profit right out of high school and develop a hefty resume.

i thought that even if i didnt pursue a med school or a professional school, there would be decent paying jobs in the life sciences/ healthcare field that with my degree and maybe a certificate, could make me 80 k. but with my degree it seems like its professional school making 100k+ or work as a lab tech making 12 hr. no in between. i lucked up an got a job at a car dealership paying decently, but now that im getting older i realize i have to make a move towards a career. feeling like i fukked up big time waiting too long.
My sister got a degree in Biology and she works for a company that reviews logs/complaints on lab equipment and devices. Making sure they meet standards (or something like that). I think you may just need help finding jobs that look for people with your degree. Reach out to the career development department at the school you graduated from... or just do some research on jobs for people with your degree. Look out for the jobs you have no clue about. It might end up being something you're interested in.
