Thinking about it, this might be an indication of how these virtual items will play out.

The moment people can start customising their items for free, the novelty will wear off.

On a subconscious level, I think people run to certain things because it makes them standout. The moment people could put mp3s on their phone, customised ring tones died out because everyone could do it.
