Hey all.

Last week I had lunch in DC, and this woman walked to my table and talked about the state of this country, etc. She was obviously in still candidate mode even though she did not win.

Anyway, she brought up something I never thought of before. Healthcare is important for national security. But not in the sense of containing outbreaks and having a healthy populous.

She brought it up with regards to the military. Not just for veterans or active members, but future members. Most of our military are made up of lower middle class and poor persons. By not giving them proper access to healthcare at a younger age, we are cutting off a lot of potential military members.

How do you brehs feel about this? And if you like it, why hasn't it been brought up before by anyone.

pics of the woman?

sorry, thought this was JBO

jk...just about everything can be called a "natural security issue" if you follow her line of thinking. and there is a lot of literature/research on the importance of proper nutrition/food security/health care as a driver of educational attainment.

i would say health care should be a national priority because absence of a national strategy leads to much higher costs for the country/citizens, which obviously crowds out money that can be used for other needs (defense for instance)

her website is linked.... If you into that GILF life, get into it. :scust:

I think framing it that way, and talking about the military is different than how I heard it before and may resonate.

But seriously...it's not a bad argument, per se.

I don't think it's one that could stand on it's own when trying to make a case for improving US health care (single-payer, Medicaid for all, centralized price negotiation, etc.)

It could be an effective rhetorical device, however. :jbhmm:

Just tie it to the military.

Needing soldiers. It could work.

The cynic in me would initially compel me to :scust:at that argument and tell her to :camby:with that.

However, it's not a bad supporting argument but it's not enough to be a primary one. I mean, I can't imagine someone getting up on TV and saying, "We need to have better healthcare for our poor, young people so we can send more of them to war."

I'd imagine the opposite argument could be made. The vast majority of military members aren't physical specimens.

I'd imagine keeping your population without extensive or universal health care would actually further incentivize joining and staying in the military because it provides you and your family access to many of your basic needs. If this sounds vaguely familiar it's the same argument for "good jobs with benefits."

Ill continue the discussion further if someone likes but that's the gist of it.

You're right.

Everyone should be able to have health care if you limit or get rid of capitalism
