There's a reason their so adamant about it and you really have to take their wisdom in account.

Old people been through the things that we have yet to go through but eventually will. The only thing that got a lot older black folks through was faith because in their eras, you were looked at as less than human and freely expressing adverse opinions just didn't happen.

I would imagine that a lot of it is generational. This whole say it loud im "atheist/agnostic/anti religious " and proud message only recently became mainstream. Back in the day everybody believed in God, and if they didn't they kept it to themselves.

I think our parents and grandparents generation just aren't used to the idea that the [black] person sitting next to them might not believe in God

Yeah, that's why I stay away from Baptist churches in particular. I would just try to volunteer with a non religious group. Or I'd do work with the Catholics.
It's not a religious group though. It's just that the meeting is held in a church. There isn't one word about scripture or faith beyond the opening prayer. There are about 30-40 people that show up from all faiths and denominations. Great work is done in there but those dudes just didn't understand that.

I try to say the same thing too. My mother who hasn't been to church in a decade tried to tell me about Christianity :childplease: I told her, "not everyone thinks like you". She just started back getting on this kick. As an Agnostic who believes some form of afterlife, it's confusing. I do respect the Pope.

P.S. I have the Holy Quran, Bible, book on Judaism, and The Buddhist Sultra in my bedroom. There's so many religion. I even get the weird feeling when someone asks me do I go to church :ld:
Ive seen you post that you respect the Pope more than once.

Why?:patrice:

Damn, I wish I can find a group like that here. I'd be down for something like that.

Our generation is free thinkers. The previous generations basically accepted what was passed down to them as law and there was an understanding that you didn't challenge your parents.

Current generation are free thinkers?

If the previous generations accepted what was basically passed down to them as law then how are Black people no longer in slavery and in Jim Crow? Why or how did the Nation of Islam have such a large following?

O.K.

But even in terms of religion; pasts generations were not as straight jacketed as you think. Think about it; the people that went on to join the Nation of Islam were actually people whose parents were Christians (see Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali). And lots of other Black people never practiced any mainstream religion at all.

If it ain't white Jesus it ain't right. These are the folks who bash creflo dollar but love Joel osteen. That's not a coincidence. They love and adore one crook over the other. Ask yourself why.

The older christian generation are too far gone and will never change. It is what it is. The younger generation aren't that much different to be honest.
I agree its rare to find a black person my age in real life that is not religious I have found.

Religious or Spiritual? To me Religion is ceremony, whereas Spiritualism is belief.

A lot of people are religious, but they may not be spiritual. I have known lots and lots of people that were spiritual, but they were not religious.
