I remember that when I was little, my mother wouldn't take us out for trick-or-treating until around the 6:00 p.m. mark.

Nowadays, it seems like it's more the daytime hours are for the kids, and the night time for the adults. Also, because so many kids are doing it during the daytime anyway, any parent that would take the kids out during the night-time would be missing out on candy anyway, cuz it would be all gone during the day.
