Is it just me, or is arguing almost pointless?

Arguing is a necessary evil..

Too many people like to take advantage of people when they know they'll get away with it

If you don't fight your corner, that encourages them to keep bullying/undermining you

Thus the reason most folks argue. It's natural and completely necessary to defend your views/values. This is something I've, sadly, only learned in recent years. The double-edged blade.

I get you, but 99% of the time, the real answer is indoctrination. As a kid, we didn't "Seek out God." Nope, my ass was dragged to church.
You tell a kid that his father was an astronaut, if you say it long enough, he will "believe" it. Belief is a funny thing.
You not lying. I'm honestly more comfortable having someone tell me, "I believe it just cause, that's why:birdman:"
then distorting actual facts to rationalize your belief. somebody in the other thread quoted the law of conservation of energy, and went on to cite how that is proof of an omnipotent God:beli:. I mean c'mon those two things directly contradict each other.

Arguing is good for me because it helps me to articulate how I feel, which is so often contrary to how others feel.

I also listen to other's points of view and see if what they're saying makes sense. I've discarded certain ideas and adopted new ones on that basis.

Surely I'm not the only one who has benefited from an argument in such a way. Of course, I don't think arguments are about "winning" or "losing", I think they're about coming to the right conclusion. There's a fine line between debate and argument too. A poster in here said that argument is "debate with emotion", but if you're passionate about something, you can't help but have emotion involved. Otherwise, why debate in the first place if you don't really care? :yeshrug:

It really depends on the two people and their relationship. Arguments are pointless but debates are very useful in getting to know a person and I wouldn't even qualify all arguments as pointless. A debate is simply an argument with controlled emotions. I think friends are going to have more debates than arguments...whether it be about sports, music, career, etc. In a relationship I think it's necessary to have arguments so you know what ticks a person off but you shouldn't be going at it every other day. . Nothing wrong with having opposing opinions or even getting angry but you shouldn't be wildin all the time in your relationship.

Arguing is mostly pointless, but not completely pointless. I don't do it much since I don't care to anymore, but there are times when a person can change their opinion on a topic later after an argument and something productive could come out of it.

The Wrong Side of the Tracks

A rational argument for why slavery is wrong is not what got blacks out of the cotton fields.

Actually, rational argument(s) did. The Civil War was icing on the cake, but slave trading was already illegal in Europe for over 50 years before it was 'abolished' here.

It wasn't that slavery was 'wrong' so much as unnecessary and prohibitively costly.

The Truth
I enjoy debates. They help to expand the knowledge base, and often, helps change your opinion on things.

An argument, however, implies emotion, which means mofos are going to argue because its easier to do than to try to lay hands. I won't ever bother arguing with anyone.
In fact, I passed over what seemed like a promising relationship because the chick was argumentative. Arguments are useless, I leave that to sensitive dudes and irrational
women.
I agree

I don't even mind arguments if there's a mutual respect for the other person and their opinion. I don't mind being wrong or if the other can make a great point, I still might not change my opinion but give mutual respect because they have a decent argument and I'm not trying to change anybody's opinion. I rather open a persons train of thought.. But if you just stubbornly trying to argue I can't fukk with you at the least.

Grew up in a family of argumentative, loud, stubborn people. I know if I believe in something I'm usually right even if I'm wrong. If we can't have a conversation or even a yelling match without emotions then I don't fukk with you irl :yeshrug:

I love debates though... Please, change my views I beg of you because my opinions of shot aren't really high
