Is it just me or is social media making people more basic?

I don't mean basic in regards to not being fly but people are almost becoming boxed into a few archetypes.

i was watching this

and felt like a similar thing is happening to people. I remember in high school you had jocks, hipsters, nerds, gangstas, hip-hop heads, stoners, skaters, emo kids, dusty kids who loved anime and hung out near the art classes in the back, preppy kids who wore lacoste and abercrombie, cholos and cholitas, etc. There was a little overlap (some skaters were stoners) but there were more lanes to choose from.

Now it feels like people are getting consolidated into a few smaller lanes. Everybody listening to the same music for the most part, we watch the same shyt on streaming services, using the same slang, eating the same food, etc.

Now the only meaningful difference between people is gender, race & political affiliation. I've noticed in the last year I could talk to American women of various races, genders & types (goth, career focused chick, spiritual chick, hoodrat) and they all using the same slang terms and buzzwords to the point I know how they will respond to shyt before they do.

Everybody rock champion and forces / dunks now. Everybody want a "thicc AF goth gf" now wtf is that shyt. I thought this was just online but NO people talk like this in real life now. I dunno man i'm high and this shyt is weird

There is two things OP.

1.All those things still exist today, but they overlap each other more than today cause today culture is accepting of it.
2.Social media makes it easier for people to catch onto trends and what is hot/cool/the norm.

Trust me the same shyt was happening back then threw tabloids, newspapers, magazines, and forums. Social media just amplified what was already there.
All those designs back then from those companies were all using similar designs even if you don't see it. It's easier to copy other nikkas now.:yeshrug:

Yes and no.

You can easily live in your own bubble with your own niche interests and not be aware of other forms of art/entertainment these days

Whereas before the expansion of social media(pre 2008) that was less of the case.

I'll put like this: for folks around my age group (basically the "core" millennials), regardless of their social group, we can generally identify with certain songs, movies and TV shows that were popular during our youth, even if we weren't really fans of said movies and music. Same with the gen x, the baby boomers, etc.

For this era, eventhough there's a lot more cultural blending going on, everything is just wide open due to more options which allows people to live in their own bubble or own world whatever.

That's not necessarily a good or bad thing either, it's just the way it is.

I don’t want to say you’re wrong, I think it just depends on the circles that you’re in because I haven’t seen any of this stuff that you’re talking about.

You mentioned all the high school cliques, those cliques still exist everywhere. Depending on who you are or what clique you fall into it could seem like everyone is doing the same things around you. Not true at all.

I’m around pretty much an all preppy crowd. Everything from where i work, to where I live, to where I socialize, to what I see on social media, is preppy. I know everybody is not preppy. And this crowd would cringe at everything you talking about.

Because everything is coming to a helm and all is being merged into one. It will make the transition into the “New Golden Age” smoother.

i actually think social media has taken peoples ability to critically think.

its basically the modern day, "keeping up with the joneses"

Other than that social media is really for women and degenerate men at this point. Any man who is out of high school posting on social media or worried about what someone said on social media is a pathetic man simp.
