I hope so then
yes and no.

They basically make reggae songs in spanish in the hood.
They play some old school dancehall the issue is the same as in the rest of the world They don´t play the violent or super sexual stuff.

So they don´t have or acknowledge Dancehall Reggae They just make their own form of it.

There´s the traffic cop I know who´s a Spanish reggae cat.

When’s the last time Reggae produced a star in The States?

It was a factory line once Dancehall hit. Some bigger than others but they all made big enough noise

Shabba
Patra
Mad Cobra
Buju
Supercat
Mad Lion
Beenie Man
Elephant Man
Sean Paul…

Aside from Damien Marley it’s been crickets for like 20 plus years…Oddly enough that’s around the time Daddy Yankee hit state side. Sure his momentum didn’t carry into others immediately but now them nikkax have a strangle hold

Coincidence?

This was all over tiktok.

Goatganda the pearl of Africa
Reggae and dancehall are by far the most popular genres in Jamaica. Younger Jamaicans also listen to rap/hip hop and genres from nearby countries like soca.

jamaica is tiny though, only 3 mill and outside of jamaica the diaspora is just around the same amount.

Afrobeats and amapiano are more popular now but both genres cant touch the soul of reggae

like just listen to this track :to:

Afro beats killed reggae/dancehall

Jamaica >>nigeria and south africa

dancehall got too vulgar , if you ain't nigerian or south african and undersstand xhosa, zulu, pidgin, etc. on avg the listener in the west has no idea what's being said even though it can be vulgar

you can play this song in front of your grandma and they wouldn't even understand it

Reggae is doing fine to me.

Dancehall is worse image wise. Popular but censored, banned, or heavily monitored in latin/carribean countries.

If dancehall artists ever get serious about using more Spanish in their songs, I think reggaeton would have stiffer competition. I wish Ja artist would do more belize or Panamanian collabs to get there.
