I'm a hardgainer (naturally thin) and can't seem to build any muscle.

I'm thinking of trying protein shakes and whatnot, but I'm wondering if they'll just make me fat considering my crappy genetics. So...it is possible to gain muscle mass without gaining a significant amount of fat? Or do I have to do the whole bulking/cutting thing?

I used to be one of those narcissistic a$$holes who thought they were unique and couldn't gain weight.:leostare: There are such things as clean and dirty bulks. Just up your calorie and protein intake up and hit the weights...have a day for cardio if you want. Keep your fat ratio in your foods down. Chicken breast, fish and turkey are all lean protein sources. What's your height and weight and your goal?

i remember reading somewhere that it's possible but a little complicated.

it was some sort of nutrition plan where you had to work out 5 times a week (maybe the phat routine or something like that) and some days would be all liquid intakes and eat specific foods and amount of cals on specific days. and then the last rest day of the week you had to eat like crazy and anything you want.

i also remember that your body fat had to already be around 10-12%

figure out your maintenance

eat slightly above that

increase the increment until you find a sweet spot

calories that arent burned or converted to producing muscle = fat

even for a hardgainer, most "hardgainers" overestimate how much they really eat. You gotta put food down like its a job

i got my friend who started out skinny as a rail on SL and hes clean bulking, has actually lost 4 lbs while improving his squat by 75lbs, bench by 30, row by 30, and OH press by 20(6 weeks)

It is not possible. You can minimize fat gain and bulk WITHOUT GAINING FAT %. You can not, however, add muscle mass WHILE DROPPING YOUR BF %.

It's only possible under exceptional circumstances - coming back from injury, sickness or an operation; "super supplements"; beginner gains. For anyone else, can't be done... Look into carb cycling if you want to minimize fat gains though. The muscle gains are slow, too, but you don't lose your 8 pack (if you care about that).

I'm 5'9 and around 150ish. I don't have any particular goal other than to get more cut, gain a little muscle tone and maintain (or lose a little) body fat. Right now I have a bird chest and very little muscle definition. I don't want to start eating more and then just end up with a gut.
