Is it possible to raise the level of HL discourse?

So many threads devolve into one-liners, posting smilies, pissing contests, and the willful ignoring of posters' arguments to create strawmen and misrepresentations.

It's easy to get pulled into that type of behavior because it is so prevalent. Sometimes I've been guilty of it myself.

In 2017 I'm trying to get away from that, even if it means blocking certain posters so don't get dragged down into the gutter .

Does anyone else want to commit to elevating their own discourse in HL and hopefully by doing so, elevate the subforum as a whole?

I know. That partly prompted this thread. Dudes are cavalierly big upping the Holocaust and every other post is calling someone a fakkit or bytch. Like really brehs? That's not what I visit HL for.

TLR is a cesspool. HL is only marginally better. There's at least the prospect of a halfway decent discussion here, for a period of time, before sexist and homophobic slurs start flying and people choose ignorance over an honest evaluation of arguments and evidence.

For a subforum called "Higher Learning," the standards should be much, much higher.

My bad for the derail @JahFocus CS. I think once the election hype dies down things will go back to normal. Give it a few months and the coli will be great again! Outside of the election stuff and WOAT contenders there have been a lot of good discussions.
