From the signals sent out with America's responses to Syria, Benghazi, Iraq, Russia, Ukraine, or North korea, it seems like the US isn't going to be involved in anything besides sanctions. However, I don't think the US can afford to distrupt economic relationships with China for numerous reasons. Basically, the US won't do anything to China.

I think China should take the gamble and take tawian. If the US, basically doesn't respond, not only China will have Taiwan for good, China will hve also effectively ended America's sphere influence in Asia, and perhaps even more regions, without ever once meeting the US on the battlefield.

Will the us US respond to Taiwan's fall? I honeslty don't think US will.

concisely, the us promised to defend Taiwan. If I recall correctly, it was even explicitly stated in the Taiwan relations act of 1979.

Slowly, but surely, the united states has been punking-out to China over the issue. Taiwan is supposed to be the "China" that world recognizes. Now, the world only recognizes the PRC and taiwan is not an official soveriegn Nation. However, Taiwanese passports still say ROC (republic of china)

The US is supposed to recognize taiwan, but during the bush admin, the US gave into Chinese pressure and wouldn't let the Taiwanese President visit united states. This was right after China effectively deomstrated it could shoot down satellites with ease.

Most countries have given into China and no longer recognize Taiwan. The US is one of the few tht still officially recognizes it.

This is probably the best time for China to make a bold move like that. The us is distracted by a thousand things and with China's demographic crisis, they are going to be in serious trouble in the not future.

But it won't happen, cause China is afraid of the Pacific Fleet. They also don't want to give the Japanese an excuse to jump in. Any successful attack would require China to deal with us forces stationed in Japan.

is the basic idea simply to surround china with military presence with areas like taiwan and the philippines as footholds? i was just wondering what possible end game there is for the US in this and what china actually gains by disrupting it. not sure about this part wondering if you could elaborate.
