Too early, but if I’m keeping it a buck I only liked Malcolm X, He Got Game, School Daze, The Inside Man, and Do the Right Thing from Spike Lee.

Some of his other work that is revered I thought was kinda meh.

That said I’m going to give Spike the benefit of doubt just based on consistency and say Coogler hasn’t passed him yet, but I think he eventually will.

I already personally prefer Coogler’s work.

I give Coogler a LOT of credit for making a vampire movie work. He's that caliber of director imo, where he can hook you in with a premise.

:mjpls:dare I say.....better than Nolan.

I said, "Zay...don't teach these low level primitive species how to make fire....Zay don't teach these low level primitive species how to read...Zay don't give these low level primitive species movies..,"

And what did Zay do? Every thing I asked him not to. And here we are a Millennia later....

He did not direct Judas and the Black Messiah.

Yall saw Judas and The Black Messiah and are still making this statement:comeon:

I didnt think X was that good before I knew anything about Malcolm X. It gets worst after you learn about Malcolm X. That whole little bullshyt section where hes doing the jitterbug with Spike Lee and has a white woman couldve been left out. 30-45 minutes of time wasted just so Spike could get some screen time I guess. Then dont get me started on Denzels portrayl where he plays Denzel, and doesnt look anything like Malcolm X.

I definitely dont think this should be the quintessential Malcolm X biography. Maybe Coogler can be tapped to do another one:respect:
You mad special bruh....

I agree with that. Nolan is a little overrated to me though. I like what he did with his take on Batman, Dunkirk, and Interstellar though.

Some of his other work was too abstract for my liking.

If we’re talking about highest-grossing films, Ryan’s the only breh in the top 20. If we’re talking cultural impact among Zillenials and zoomers it’s Ryan as well. Certain generations have aged out of the conversation, especially when you consider who the film industry currently caters to.

That's not fair breh, Malcom X is an objective masterpiece, damn near a perfect film.

Echoing @Peter Popoff about Judas and the Black Messiah, that film deserves way more love. Coogler is def otw as far as being one of the greats though. Bro even got a Nolan co-sign, thats a big fukkin deal.

Downplaying X to big up Judas and Black Messiah is nasty work :scusthov:

That jitterbug part was always my grandmothers favorite part so you saying that it shoulda been left out really stands out to me.

Both movies were historically inaccurate because you should already know the Hollywood game has to be played, Spike even spoke about that

But opinions aside....X had a way bigger cultural impact over J&BM. X literally brought the popularity of the NOI back to the forefront and created a new wave of interest towards Malcolm. Minister Farrakhan himself had a surgency in popularity immediately after that movie took off. J&BM literally went under the radar in terms of cultural impact. There was no serge in interest towards the Black Panthers after that movie dropped. Black Panther(Marvel) and Creed on the other hand had cultural impact. J&BM bombed at the box office while X made over double it's budget money back. The X hats and the X shirts were a staple during the promo run. Look at the top NBA players caught up in the wave. J&BM didn't have that.

And I'm not doing like you are, downplaying one to big up the other. Like I said, Black Panther and Creed are culturally iconic but when you put J&BM next to X, it doesn't have the same cultural impact. And those are the facts, not my opinion.

I didnt know he didnt write or direct Judas And The Black Messiah. But he damn sure produced the hell out of that thang:wow:. Im going to say that Coogler touch made an impact.

Spike has many NOTEABLE movies. Alot of that being due to the fact he didnt have as many peers and he was annointed the chosen one. So we just happen to know his films up to a certain point. But the only films of Spike Lees i really like are Bamboozled,Hes Got Game, Do the Right thing(meh).Miracle Of Santa Ana i think i remember this getting hyped, but when I saw it for myself:camby:. Crooklyn, long and slow, what was the plot again? X overrated as well because Denzel is in it. Black Klansmen? Wack because Denzels uncharismatic son is in it:mjlol:.

And if i didnt mention your favorite Spike movie. It probably came long after he was washed and i never saw it. Or it was overrated from when he was the Bill Russell of black directors.

Hell no

Breh

She's Gotta Have It
School Daze
Do The Right Thing
Mo' Better Blues (EXTREMELY OVERLOOKED)
Jungle Fever
Malcolm X
Crooklyn (Finally getting the love it deserves)
Clockers

Back-to-back for the brehs and young who were unaware

That's almost a decade of hit films. No diss to Coogler at all, but in no way.

I'd also add inside man and 25th hour to those as well.

Nıgga please.

Cooglers little discography is overrated.

Jordan Peele, Issa Rae, Courtney Kemp, Kerry Washington, Tasha Smith and Cord Jefferson are better screen writers and directors than him.

My wife wants to see it this weekend so I'll give my review but based off prior history, dude is just OK at best.

Black Panther 2 was trash and Fruitvale station was ok but not better than Spike Lee's low tier films.

Black Panther 1 was good but let's not act like it would've been a layup for any up and coming black director with that budget, time, casts and Tyler Perry studios.

He exposed himself with part 2.

Creed 1 & 2 is not in my top 5 boxing films but Michael B. Jordan directed part 3.

Not saying dude is trash but he's aight at best.

Also Black Kkklansman is criminally underrated. I loved that film. No plotholes and probably one of John David's bodies of work right behind that film he did with Zendaya. The writing was phenomenal and the revenge at the end was 🤌🏽.
