You ain't wrong, you're definitely missing out though. If you're copping a NAS album get "It Was Written" though, album has aged much better and is pure heat.

I've never listened to illmatic (or any of nas' music, really), I've only really heard tupacs singles

let him go ham buyin everything he wants to hear. downloading is overrated anyway, its making the trip, selectin the music, purchasing it and feelin good, openin the CDs, reading the credits and lookin at the booklets
who cares he is spending $100? that's a perfect amount. I spend that on CDs when I'm in another countries and I need beats.

It's only wrong because you're missing out on great music. I was born in 1989 (24 yo) but Ive heard All Eyez On Me, 7 Day Theory, MATW, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt etc at some point before I was an adult. My family were huge Death Row/2Pac/Snoop Doggy Dogg fans when I was a kid so I had exposure.
The only rapper's discrography I really wasnt checking for when I was younger was Biggie, I remember when I was a boy before the internet era where kids started staying in the house, me and other kids used to pass time back then by hanging out in the park. During either 97 or 98 I remember the older dudes would blast Biggie's shyt and me and the other kids would sing Hypnotize and Mo Money Mo Problems but I never checked for Biggie's actual albums till I was literally grown. So I know what you're going through atleast with Biggie. When you hear the music for the first time it's like nothing you ever experienced.

if he has the money then go for it, i'm just saying if he buys something and doesnt like it he might be discouraged from buying anymore in fear of wasting money. i don't buy anything these days unless i download it first, there are very exceptions to that rule.
maybe if we gave him a list of 10 undebatable classics and he could get them

Anyway OP you're not "wrong" for not having listened to those albums, there's so much music out there that it's already hard to keep up with current music, even worse trying to "catch up". I've never listened to a ATCQ, De La, Outkast or Roots album even though I've been in this since 93
but I know i'm missing out on some dope music and cornerstones of the culture.
