Why is that? There are tons of artists that were great in one decade and came back the next with mediocre returns.

phenomenon was his only really piss poor album tracklisting wise.

yet, phenomenon was meant to launch a book and featured him tailoring back, edge wise.
yet, moving forward and giving us what would become the blueprint.

for the what would soon become the melody based hook used to highly draw in the later nineties with:

on top of the whisper flow spit to perfection.
plus, the incredible record father.
along with his drawing pre-req then, in the posse cut with 4321.

Definitely in Top 10. He is what got me into Hip Hop and I was a huge fan from '87-'95 and still enjoyed his music until the GOAT album which was his last good album imo.

definition, and todd smith are actually better, than the goat..
if you take them for what they are worth.

plus, the best legendary moments on ten easily outshine the goat album, too.

although,....the flow on you and me, on the goat..
could argueably be the best flow on an rnb feature heavy rap record in the history of rap, though.

Funny because I thought Phenomenon is one of those albums that was unfairly hated on, in part because because LL celebrity was rising outside of hip-hop and people felt he was getting an industry push that maybe over shadowed talent even on his own label and also that it was an unapologetically commercial album that in a lot of ways foreshadowed the Jiggy era by a couple of years yet, LL spits so proficiently for the most part that you couldn't really criticize him from a technical standpoint.

I always thought 75% of his album (any of em) was iffy to wack. That last 25% was always AMAZING. shyt was weird. But over the years those three or four hot joints per album added up to a tsunami of classic material. It took me like 15 years to admit this.

Something like

1. G Rap
2. KRS -One
3. Rakim
4. Melle Mel
5. LL Cool J/Chuck D
6. Kane

I remember back in like 2ooo.

I had a huge discussion to authenticate g rap as the reigning goat over rakim.
where me and scoop were at healthy cultural discussion war at the time.
over me ranking g rap over ra.
glad krs came back and further solidified why he was the real goat, later on in the 2ooo's, with no question.

then, ra....dropped an incredible seventh seal with only two hiccups which were a maino feature and a one pisspoor feature hook choice which he did not perform.

I feel he was moving in to the media aspect even more and promoting two books.
his autobiography and a children's book.
so, phenomenon was him shifting into supreme gateway defjam rap icon mode.
after it was all said and done, I appreciated it.
when, it was initially released.
I was not in the mode.
or old enough to understand that move at the time.

yet, the battle and destruction of canibus on, can I bus.
soon created a renewed fervor to not fully say fukk ll.
plus, how mature he was about giving canibus advice on the phonecall tapes.
to say like a real emcee....
man, understand what you getting into by dissing me.
it is not like being in some random cypha.
on top of, telling him....
I already been you, and you can't beat me in a battle, with humility.

it was on ten, where he finally apologized culturally and returned and upgraded his focus to the culture.
plus, who he was artistically in full scope.
that was when, he won me back as an actual fan like I was a kid again.
I still remember when I first heard fa ha, as the bside single.
it was like getting I need love on the a side.
revamped and upgraded, with his new skills and toolbox he carried over.
then, getting an upgrade to the candy series records.
that, were my magnum opus when I was real little.
