what mediocre returns do you speak of? outside of maybe phenomenon, he didnt drop any mediocre albums until the '00s, after he announced his retirement. 14 shots & mr smith are met with mixed emotions, depending on who you ask. and i rarely hear somebody saying that goat was weak.

if his joints were truly mediocre like the other artists' joints, then he wouldve phased into oblivion right along with them.

14 shots to the dome was a complete mess and Mr. Smith, Phenomenon, and GOAT were all less than 4.0/5 or less albums. (Mr. Smith was the best of the 3). The rest of the catalog speaks for itself; And he necessarily wouldn't have phased into oblivion, his previous work as a pioneer of hip hop and his money gave him access to stay in the game longer than most.

LL stayed in the game because he was guaranteed to churn out hit records everytime he dropped an elbum. even post-retirement.

- goat was a 4/5 in my book. and the album was generally well-received.
- mr smith was basically the 'lets jam' fun-time album of '96(yea i know it dropped at the end of '95). i havnt heard it since '96-97 so i wont rate it.
- cant rate 14 shots either but i recall the album having bangers. but i'll leave that one alone.

I guess he's a toss up for most, but I just can't put him in there based on the work after 1990...some was good, some was bad; it wasn't consistent enough for me

i'm listenin' to goin' back to cali right now....

i've said it before but i'll say it again, that song is one of the best produced songs of all time. it's so clear and crisp; ll's whisper flow and delivery was excellent on it

the music video for it was great too, one of the best music videos of all time

heres the thing i have a gripe with. and i dont know if it or applies to you or not.

people love to criticize LL for post-prime work, but alot of the same people will have dude like jay & nas in their top 10 or even top 5.

and those LL albums were better than most of their post-prime work by far.

Just outside the top 5, but to be honest, every time I make my own personal top 10 list him and Chuck D switch the 5 and 6 spots.

you need to relisten to fourteen shots to the dome.

not only does it have one of the best and most important rap songs in rap history on it, in:

all we got left is the beat

it is a very solid album, and follow up to mama said.
of course, it is not a perfect classic like mama said.

it is more just another consistent release from ll.

fourteen shots came when ll was under pr fire, from media outlets.
which poisoned fan support, past what it should have been.
similar to krs in the same year as well, with sex and violence.
which is also underrated and an incredible album.
that saw krs's draw dulled from pr fire, erroneously.

to take both out of the realm of the past perception they garnered originally.
