I would say MJ has a case for the GOAT of all sports. But it is impossible to say one person is MUCH better than all the other GOAT candidates of all sports.

Is MJ truly leagues above Muhammad Ali? Plus when you factor in other sports, you really have to research some players you might not be aware of. For example, in women's tennis we have Serena Williams (18 grand slams), Martina Navratilova (18 grand slams plus 31 grand slam doubles), Steffi Graff (22 slams), Chris Evert (18 slams). But one name goes unmentioned because she is from the Pre-Open era (but also played some in the Open Era) and is an active anti-homosexual activist (so nobody speaks of her in pleasant terms) ---- the name is Margaret Court. She has 24 grand slam titles and when you add doubles and mixed doubles she has a record of 64 slams.

The only reason Wilt Chamberlain is not called the GOAT is because he "only" has 2 titles. Well in terms of tennis, Margaret Court has Wilt Chamberlain records that nobody will ever come close to touching AND she has the Bill Russell like lead over all people in the game in terms of championships. So despite nobody knowing who she is, that is a GOAT candidate that is hard to overcome.

Michael Jordan is the best mix of impact, accomplishments and popularity. But if we strip away popularity and just look at the accomplishments within one's respected sport, it becomes hard. Think of wrestlers such as Danny Hodge or Cael Sanderson. In college, Cael won 4 national championships in 4 years and had a perfect career (never lost, 159-0). He did lose some in the Olympics but eventually got an Olympic gold and as the coach of Penn State wrestling has led them to 4 straight national titles.

It's really about who you love the most. This type of debate would never end well.

Woods ain't even above Nicklaus:skip:

I'm a Tiger stan

As far as the question, I'd say Gretzky as far as team sports is concerned.

But individual sport, no one amassed a crazy record like Alexandr Karelin who wrestled for USSR
won 3 Olympic gold medals in a row:ehh:
9 World Championships:ohhh:
went 13 years undefeated in international wrestling without losing:gladbron:
6 years straight without giving up a single point:wow:
overall record 887-2:dead:

They played in diff eras. Same reason I have Jordan over Kareem. On paper Kareem has more accolades than Jordan, but I'd easily choose Jordan.

Same reason I choose tger over jack.

Also ppl up underestimate tigers excellence. In no other sport are you consistently playing against an entire field. Ppl under estimate what that means. Tiger was doing that against the elites of the world, and crushing them on an unparalleled level for an unprecedented time.

His feats in golf are straight up ridiculous.

Beating a team in a championship is nice, but beating a field of hundreds of golfers consistently is straight up ridiculous
