Is online/distanced learning more accepted?

nah my dude. get ur degree the old fashion way. by physically going to class. it'll help you develop people skills. and besides if i was an employer i wouldn't respect a degree from an online school. its one thing to take a few classes here and there online. but to get ur entire degree online. nah.

Life -- helps you develop "people skills", though. Why wouldn't you respect a degree from an online school? Not to toot my own horn, but a lot of people I run across in life (online and off) that attend traditional on-campus classes aren't able to compete with me, intellectually. If I were to obtain my masters online (instead of going to med school) and pursue clinical psychology, I'd be just as knowledgeable as the next person. Is that not worthy of respect? The financial investment in distanced learning alone should warrant respect... but I want to know why it wouldn't for you.

I've had online classes. Never got anything lower than a B+, but I didn't retain the information. I learn better in-class.

If you're going to take online classes take it from a legit school and not from one of the for-profit schools.

I'm a strong independent learner, but I excel online or off. How will you gauge what's for-profit or not when most online schools are featured on the college board and are regionally accredited?

Go for it. Make sure to find a legit public state university (or private) with regional accreditation that offers some online degrees. Most real colleges have distance learning and offer some sort of online degree.

Don't ever mess with those fake online scam schools that are always advertised. Degrees from those colleges mean nothing and you won't get hired. Avoid for-profit schools like University of Phoenix and such.

I take a mixture of online and on campus classes from a public university. Will be getting my Masters soon.

i still don't think they respect a person who gets a whole degree online. but the idea of taking some online classes is not looked down on. in fact, i think universities will move towards this more in the future. they've already shifted some of their materials online as it is. now it'll be fewer public classes while taking a fair amount of online courses...

Online schooling is harder, but it doesn't command the same respect. As an interviewer, I normally have a bias against people who have online degrees. I depict them as not being disciplined enough to actually attend a physical class and people who look for convenience, rather than doing it the old fashioned way.

Also, not having real contact with the professor is crucial, especially on the grad school level. There are many things taught on that level that you can't get from a text book. You can't ask an online professor to give you a letter or recommendation.

Online classes require way more work and writing for half of the respect, which is why it doesn't make sense. However, if you get that online degree from a respected university, it doesn't matter because nobody will know if it's online. For example. real universities have hybrid courses where you do some online and some in a traditional college setting. Those get respected. It's the ones where all the classes are done online and the schools are known as virtual schools that get the side eye.

Though it is very convenient, it requires a ton of discipline to school online. It's nothing to sleep on. My school, Kaplan University, tracks our log-in time, discussion board, and live, online seminar and lecture participation for attendance. If you're a full-time student, there's a certain amount of time you're supposed to spend logged on every week to meet the attendance requirements. A lot of students forget that and flunk out, wasting their money, indefinitely.

We communicate with our professors in a variety of ways: email, Google Talk, Skype (on some occasions), discussion boards, and live seminars and lectures. Anything worth learning is indeed worth reading and readable, so I cannot agree. I've spoken with both Georgia State University and John Hopkins School of Medicine, and they both have no problems with accepting students who's hard work is reflected in their grades (and in John Hopkins case, their recommendations). Our professors certainly can recommend us, and we have clubs, honors programs, Dean and Presidents Lists (to name a few) that we can be a part of -- as with any traditional university.

I think what should be taken into account is the fact that times are undoubtedly different from how they used to be and continue to rapidly evolve with each day's technological advancements, bro. We live in the days where technology literally runs the world. Distanced education combats the traditional method on many levels and wins on some of them. I was initially very worried that I wouldn't be able to transfer over to GSU (for my pre med classes) being that I am a full-time distanced learner, but it turns out I have absolutely nothing to worry about. My credits are legit and transferable, and my 4.0 is very, very real. :-)

You should look at Brick and Mortar schools that offer online degrees.

Hampton University(business)

Oregon State(good for agriculture or environmental majors)

Liberty University

:manny:

That would be the best bet. More traditional schools will offer courses in the future.

Exactly. The school I'm going to offers both so at the end of the day depending on which school you go to, a prospective employer won't know if you took all of your classes online or not.

I tend to think that online schools that are regionally accredited garner greater respect than the for profit schools that you tend to see commercials for.

I work in Human Resources and many of the hiring managers that I've worked for tend to scoff at applicants from profit schools (i.e Kaiser, Phoenix) and would often choose the applicant from a State school even if the other has more experience.

I find it more challenging, too. The time management, the dedication, the determination, etc... it's all challenging. You have to be committed. I'm a psychology major, and an aspiring psychiatrist. I'm wholly determined to make it to and through med school. The amount of work you do online rivals the work done on campus... it may even be more. People do seem to think it's a walk in the park, but you have to really work for your degree or you'll be in debt like everyone else that sleeps on the job (college).

P.S. FASFA is NO joke! fukk her! Lol.

Don't go to any of those advertised online schools (Kaplan, Phoenix, Walden & others). They are worthless. Go to a real university that offers online degrees. There are many real, regional, private and public state universities that offer psychology degrees 100% online. If you need help finding one, let me know.

I didn't want to to go as far as saying that but I agree. I try not to diminish anyone's pursuit of higher education but all degrees are not the same.

eLearning is projected to be 100 billion globally by 2015, so yeah I'd say it's becoming more accepted.
