what do ya'll think of new-school r&b? imo its not so bad. obviously the weeknd is killing it, I love his shyt, but beyond him some people are doing their thing.

a lot of ladies are holding it down right now

some of this stuff is pretty soulful, i'm surprised :ehh: I guess this generation isn't complete trash when it comes to music

It's crazy how R&B fell off so hard because originally it helped birth a lot of popular rap songs.

I'm a big old school R&B junkie so it never fell off to me personally. It just lost a lot of popularity to the masses. A lot of the trends & behaviors that hip-hop music project caught on to the masses and it caused R&B to be pushed to the side. That's why so many R&B singers wanna be hip-hop stars.

It never went anywhere:yeshrug:
Plenty of good new R&B out there. I'm in the middle of listening to the new Neyo and its pure R&B. Mary's "The London Sessions" is great. That Toni Braxton/Babyface album that won a grammy is good also. You had Miguel's and Legend's albums from last year...

I bought that album. Such greatness. One of the last R&B albums I've bought. Last was that new Omarion.

But to say it never went anywhere is false. There's NOWHERE near the amount of TV/radio exposure, the production budgets, the number of projects being released as it was 10 years ago.

R&B hasn't been in good shape since about '08

If you are going to use tv/radio exposure as a reason then all music has gone away. BET/MTV don't play music at all unless you go to their MTV Jamz or VH1 Soul channels which is where I found out that Toni and babyface had an album due a video being shown there. The reason why TRL and 106Park are gone is because we got better options.

In regards to radio, people don't have to search far for R&B/Soul because theres at least one KissFM station in every major market that ONLY plays R&B and for the most part all do consistently well in terms of listenership. Most of the time it's 2 radio stations because theres the Tom Joyner station and the Steve Harvey station and they are usually on the R&B stations. I got SiriusXM and there's 4 channels dedicated to only R&B to the fact they don't play the rap verses from some of these songs that have them. In my opinion there's MORE options for good R&B due to the internet/YouTube. no way the Weeknd would be this popular back in the 90s. Dude hasn't even released a real album yet but due to the fact he can get his stuff out there pretty easily with no barriers he's where he is now.
