nkrumah was evil? or simply poor at understanding economics
I don't think he was evil, but it wasn't just economics. He did the things he did because he has a vision of making Ghana a socialist state and he believed that he was beyond reproach.
To do that, he imprisoned his political opponents and made Ghana a one party state. Opposition politicians were forced into exile in order to escape repression. People were made to acclaim Nkrumah as the Messiah. He also instituted socialist economics which devastated Ghana's cocoa farmers because he believed he had to squeeze the farmer (the lifeblood of the economy) in order to industrialize.
