Is taking Olajuwon over Shaq to start a team a bad decision?

Yes, Hakeem has better lateral quickness than Shaq, which means he has a better shot at guarding 2s and 3s on the perimeter, and in some situations, he can guard 1s. Add the fact that Hakeem has a mid-range jumper and can occasionally hit a 3, and you have a big man that can space the floor, which is important in today's NBA.

All this means he's not going to be a liability in late game situations, so you don't have to take him out of the game and pray the other teams guards don't blow past your teams guards and make easier and/or uncontested baskets close to the rim.

Hakeem’s defensive versatility would definitely make him the choice in today’s game

I mean you cant go wrong with either guy obviously here

Shaq won four chips and people still say he underachieved. I’ll take Shaq and take my chances, no disrespect to Dream. :yeshrug:

As great and dominant as he was, he did underachieve a lot of years in his career. If the man had the work ethic at least close to Kobe, he's walking away from the game with at least twice the rings he has now. His effect on the game is that significant.

do you see hakeem getting manhandled the way the centers in the early 2000s did or would he wear shaq out from getting 30 ppg also?
Shaq would definitely get his points, but it wasn't like no one ever controlled him. Why couldn't Shaq overcome Utah in 1997 or 1998? Why did he need the refs to bail him out in the 2000 and 2002 WCF? Why was Ben Wallace able to keep him under control in 2004?

If prime Duncan could repeatedly play Shaq to a draw, then of course prime Hakeem could. And prime Hakeem does more for the rest of the team on offense and defense than Shaq does.

I love Hakeem but he was getting dominated by a young Shaq. Shaq averaged 28/12/6/ on 59%. I don't think anyone is capable of slowing Shaq down, he was killing prime Alonzo Mourning, DRob before even hitting his own prime.

Hakeem was treating david rob like his bytch

Hakeem was dominating himself, with a 33/12/6/2/2 statline on 48% shooting. The previous series he made David Robinson, the MVP of the league, look pedestrian. Like another poster said, they would cancel each other out at this point in their careers.

If I'm going to build a team from scratch in TODAY'S NBA, I'm definitely going Hakeem for his complete game. It translates much better in today's league.
