Someone mentioned they saw a screenshot with an "Upgraded Membership" item.

Which suggests that all the features of the site may not be accessible to a free user--number of photos one can upload, ability to send private messages, etc. Reminds me of some of those dating websites where they are basically trying to haul in new members via the free service, but offer all the functionality to the Upgraded Members.. They don't really care about the Upgraded Service. That's not where they make their money. They make their money by selling the info of the free members and/or building up a large enough user base for which targeted advertising is a good move for ad buyers.

Every social networking/dating site that has tried that has failed or underperformed after the free members caught onto the game.

I may be wrong, but Tariq Nasheed doesn't strike me as the type of guy who will be patient enough to sink money into a free app as the user base builds up (and the investment needed to support grows). That could take 2-4 years. That's when you get serious about direct monetization efforts--advertising, tiered membership, etc.

If "Upgraded Membership" means most of the best features of the platform aren't available to free users, it'll flop very quickly.

That's for people who contributed $500 to the campaign. So, it's clear that monetization is happening from the jump. Certain features will not be free.

Facebook was burning something like $3,000-5,000 per month in those early days for storage and hosting costs. Tariq is not a developer, so he's already invested at least $100,000 in development costs if he's rolling out a nice platform.

Does he have the patience to provide a "free" service and continue to drop money into it while the user base builds up? Not to mention he'll have to continue to have either in-house or outsourced development support.

For something like this to really succeed, you have to drop a few rounds of capital into it.

I seen other blacks turn their nose up to any black owned business whether it's a grocery store, a bank or even Tariq making videos, they saying things like oh you just trying to make money off black people.
