I am 100% ignorant of making investments. My mother has an extra $1000-$20,000 sitting in the bank right now earning no money. Would you say that the site they mention towards the end of this article is legit, or is it just an ad? Also, what would you suggest as an investment method for her? Any help would be appreciated.

Appreciate the recommendation. I'll check it out (BKF), but can anyone get me a quicker answer for my question posted in the OP? I gotta help my mother make a decision in 1-2 days.

You shouldn't rely on one site or book to teach you how to invest. Learn from multiple platforms...podcasts,blogs,books, even the coli thread on investing can show you something. For a complete beginner a good point to start is with reading the Wall Street Journal, or Bloomberg and look up the phrase you don't understand while also working on some of the stuff listed here:

5 free online investment courses

and my personal pick Investment Education, Investing 101, Investment Basics, Investment Classroom, Learn to Invest | Morningstar

Good Luck.

Betterment is a legit website.

I also want to point out though that the individual who wrote the article is using a referral link, which means that he/she will get money if you sign up by clicking his/her link. There is nothing wrong with that, and most personal finance websites do this to make money, but if I were making money off of a product that way, I'd probably be less inclined to tell you the drawbacks of the product.

There are multiple reviews online and I'd recommend reading a few of the other reviews prior to investing so that you can better understand the Pros and Cons of a robo-advisor for your money.

Thank You very much for clarifying that for me. I see nothing wrong with clicking on people's referral links. I just wanted to verify that was what I was looking at. I'll keep researching.

Ok. So the extra money is on top of an emergency fund? If not that should be it then.

If it's extra look into good mutual funds imo. No loads with good track records and low fees. Vanguard/fidelity are good sites.
