Portions of it, yeah but you have to understand that the idea of the "Middle East" is less than 200 years old.
The region was carved up by Europeans (and Americans?) in the early 20th century and they were the ones that set those borders. Many of the issues the Middle East faces today is due directly to that carving up of borders, particularly in Iraq, Iran and Syria.
